It look as if it does well!
Thanks folks. So far the lens seems to fit my purpose for getting it, hand held shooting.
For those who asked it was a one day sale at B&H - $600 and it included a Sigma UV filter.

Very good! The RedBellied and Blue Jay are absolutely terrific! As much as I don't like Grackles your photo makes him look great!

I ordered the Sigma 100 - 400 when it was on sale Wednesday. I posted some pictures in the discussion forum in a thread comparing lenses. These shots were all taken hand held with the lens mounted on a D7200.
Looks like a great lens Bill judging by this great series!
These are great, Bill! Enjoy the new lens! What is the gray bird?

Great shots Bill, good luck with the lens, looks like a winner
Great shots. How were you able to attract so many different types of birds to that sawed off branch? Much better than the usual feeder shots.

Can't get much better!!!!
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks to all who commented.
Patty, the all grey bird is a Mockingbird. The smaller, partially grey bird is a Tufted Titmouse.
Ksocha, it turns out that every bird in the neighborhood likes crunchy peanut butter. I drilled holes in the branch and pack them with peanut butter. It was supposed to attract woodpeckers, which it did, but I now seem to go through more peanut butter than sunflower seeds. I'm sure glad Wal-Mart has some cheap stuff.
