The problem is my PS is not a registered copy, what can I do?

Process in LR and send to PS.

There is so much omitted information here. What version is your Photoshop? Did you buy it as a Full or Upgrade? By registered did you mean authenticated? Adobe license permits use on two computers. Generally, after a fixed period of time an unauthenticated copy will only run in demo (can do everything, can save nothing). I recently learned the hard way that Adobe has ceased 'by phone' authentication.

Perhaps the same way I did when I got CS2. This was back in 2003. A friend was upgrading and gave me his old install disk and Serno. We both contacted Adobe Support and first inquired about the transfer and validated that it would be OK. At least that's one way.

Oh, I did buy him a number of dinners and drinks subsequent to that transfer. Additionally, I took a look at the software to see how PS actually works. That was fun, as well. It helped me formulate a few tricks that I still use today.

If that is the case, he can access any of the updated info available for that version.

He should be able to do so. However, I was quite a bit more familiar with the software long before I was familiar with Adobe's business/support model, as I rarely needed any assistance from them. I was a bit surprised when I received my first update notification and thought that was quite cool. That is until they abandoned support for the version I had and I found I needed to upgrade. At that point it was back to my buddy and do the software swap again. I was always one version behind, but still able to get updates. To date, I'm still using CS6 extended. I'm just not sure I need to place myself in a position of paying a ransom fee to use software, nor subject myself to an upgrade that kills using the software until a bug is fixed. CS6 provides me far more than I need to produce results for which I strive.

There's a really useful free program that will tell you anything you might want to know about your computer, including software license numbers. It's called Belarc Advisor.

If you can afford a D610, you can afford to be honest and pay Adobe $10 a month for a legitimate copy. How would you feel if someone used your copyrighted photograph without paying you or crediting it? It is the same thing. YOU ARE A THIEF!

The reason it can't handle the files is probably that your version of PS is too old. And, as an unregistered copy, not even entitled to an update. But an update might not help either... The last stand-alone version of PS was CS6 with Adobe Camera Raw 9.1.1 in 2015. If the D610 is a model that's newer than that, it will never be recognized by it.

You can simply do the RAW conversion in LR and then pass the image off to PS. Apparently you have a newer version of LR, that uses a newer Adobe Camera Raw version that recognizes the D610. (Note: PS and LR both use ACR... for that matter, so does Adobe Elements. But it's a separate module in PS that can be updated, to an extent, separately from the main program. With LR... and Elements.... ACR is integrated into the program and requires replacing the entire program to do an update.)

But, if your "LR Classic" is the cloud (i.e. "subscription") version, then you're likely entitled to the latest PS CC, too. Normally the subscription gets you both LR and PS, current versions and maintains them up-to-date as long as you maintain your subscription.

Your other alternative is to download the free Adobe DNG converter and use that to change your NEF files to DNG first, to be able to work the DNG files in older versions of PS.

Most of us are making the more benign assumption that not registered means "not registered" and not "pirated". But you probably know better.

If you bought and paid for a a legitimate copy of a program, why would you not register it; especially if you are having a problem with it? Tenny52 said in his post that he is using "...Lightroom Classic...." Lightroom Classic is a Creative Cloud program. The most logical scenario is that he either had a trial copy that expired or he paid for the service for some period and than cancelled. That is why he cannot download and install the updates with the code that would allow NEF files to work.

My son bought a copy which is also loaded on my PC. I think Adobe PS allows a copy to be loaded to several PC.
Besides, downloading a latest CameraRaw is free to everybody.

Sounds to me like he doesn't feel like he is stealing it because someone gave it to him. No matter. It's still a bastard copy.

If you didn't pay for it, then it is a bastard copy? Please check this:

Did you listen to free download mp3 songs, I have over a thousand of bastard copies. Or should I only download them from itune or Google-songs?
There should be a new topic : How many Hedgehoggers use bastard copies?

I pay for an artist's creative property. All of it. I do not have one pirated piece of music on any device. I also have no pirated software. None. I guess I'm just one of those old fashioned types.
