:-) I followed your link; the Porsche 930 reminds me of the many journalists
that sent them frisbeeing off mountain roads during test drives back in the day... apparently
not an easy car to master.

This forum, like so many others seems focused on gear and on sharpness, but I have seen very little about light. Photography is all about light. Most photos I have seen here are well focused, with good color, well exposed even well composed, but lacking "the light". They are mostly flat. Seems to me that "seeing the light" is the one most important ingredient of a good photo. Even the most ordinary things become objects of beauty in the right light. It would be great to have a discussion of LIGHT with examples.

When you shoot Auto all the time you get the 'average lighting'. I don't comment on a lot of shots because to me they are bland. and sometimes I can't controll myself. LOL

Can't argue with that but some subjects are just fine in even light.

Not the best, but I love firelight!

The picture of the nurse kissing the sailor in Times Square at the end of World War 2 would have been a great picture under any sort of lighting. That an "F/8 and be there moment".

For you artists, light is paramount; for those of recording life, the moment is paramount.

Agreed. Which also speaks to the point of how one should not get stuck in absolutes - such as rule of thirds - but instead think about what works for the subject or the story you're trying to tell at that moment.

Great topic Cat! Thanks for introducing it. I don't often "see the light" these days as I am more focused on subject, composition, and focus. In my early days with film photography I think I was more interested it using the light. I am going to start trying to do that again.

Shot some time in the early 70's using slide film in with a Minolta SRT 101:

Love it! And taken with a "101" to boot!

Yes Cat... good morning.

Most images are created by photographing reflected light, this is emitted light (as well) however, shining through the petals of the dutch iris below.

Really just really!
All of you are dancing around the reason some “light” “looks” so much better.

It’s called CONTRAST!!!

Don’t get me wrong it’s not just contrast, there’s a lot more that goes into an outstanding image and until you figure that out your going to be a mediocre shooter at best.

I disagree. Summing up all lighting methods and possibilities as "CONTRAST" is abysmally stupid.

Mastering light is certainly near the top of the list in taking quality photos. It sets the stage for our emotional responce to the image. But I think that it is still just one more building block to mastering technique, the technical side of the equation. Artistic vision would be at the very top of the creative ladder, above everything else. Imagination has to create the image.

Patience and empathy don't seem to be your strong suits

Could you post examples of your own work, please, and go into more detail about your point, rather than just stomping your foot in frustration?

I think it is more transcendental than that even. It is how what you see inspires your mind - how open your mind is to the beauty around you and how capable you are of arranging everything so that you translate that into something that registers that emotion on your camera's sensor, and can communicate it to your viewer. Imagination, cognition, evaluation, communication. But mostly - vision.

I've sited this story on UHH before, however as it exemplifies what you have said... so here it is again:

A talented photographer was invited to a dinner party. When he arrived the hostess said to the photographer;
"your photos are sensational; you must have great cameras".

As the photographer was leaving the party he said to the hostess;
"The food was sensational; you must have great saucepans".

a few attempts when I thought the light was just correct.. the baskets were all within a few minutes of each other. posed but pleasantly natural looking.. the stacked chairs I just saw walking around the yard. the sun rays I find inspirational but very difficult to capture and expose for correctly. just a few examples. the problem is that they were spontaneous..if I thought about the scene too long I would have missed them. I try to point out to people when I see a certain scene, light,subject, that it will never be the same again. different direction of light, particles in the air, humidity etc. etc. but often falls on deaf ears or a blind eye. thx,jim
