Anyone have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8? I have a Canon T3i and am interested in using it for indoor gatherings (parties & holidays) and for movies (grandkids & stuff). Should I buy it? What is my best lens choice for this? With my 50 mm I need a larger room or a smaller family. :-) Your thoughts? What do you use it for? Am I in the right forum?
I have the Tamron 28-75, 2.8 and it is my most used lens. Love it.

I was told by the camera store that since I have a crop sensor (T3i) that I should go with the 17-50 instead. Thoughts?

I have had the older Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for years. I shoot Nikon and this is my only "G" lens. My camera body has a focusing motor inside it for all my "D" series lens. This Tamron 17-50 lives on my camera. With 2.8, I find is fast enough where as I don't need vibration control, though it is nice to have I would not trade up for the newer lens that has VR. In conclusion, Nikon's 17-55 f/2.8 is a great lens, had one for a while and returned it, I could not justify the extra money for the Nikon. Your decision is strictly subjective, for what you say you are shooting, get the Tamron, mine came with a six year warranty and only had to send it in one time for a front element adjustment.
Look at the Canon EF-S 17-55 IS f2.8. It's a great all around lens.

I agree - - I have the Tammy 28-75 but it's not wide enough on a crop camera (7D), and not REALLY long enough for a general walkaround. Also - no IS / OS / VR - whatever.
I have a Canon 18-200 for a one-lens-does-all walk-around (many opt for the Tammy 18-270 instead - though I thought the Canon had better IQ), and just upgraded my wide-angle to mid-tele (I also have a Tokina 12-24) to the Canon 15-85:
