Thats a fantastic find!! I can't believe there aren't ads for metal dectectors on this page!!

I have an old metal dectector my son gave me many years ago when he got a new one. It still works fine. I only use it when something falls off my tractor. It dont take me to long to find it. The only other things Ive found with it is two old rusty horseshoes. He on the other hand has found quite a lot or old coins and rings. When he was into that he used to get old maps with old parkes & picknic groves. He always got permision from the land owner before he would go on their land.

Allen Shadden! Get in touch with the people and staff of "Antiques Roadshow" on the Public Broadcasting Station nearest you. They have shows that are filmed in some of the cities near you. You'll get an honest determination of what it's worth, and be sure that you take anything else that you found with the sword! We watch it here in Carlsbad, NM, and it's amazing how much these things are worth! Let us know how you make out!

What does the wngraving say and are there any maker's markings on it?

I cant make out what it says, as far as makers marks there is none, In the civil war an officer purchased his own sword and because of this he had it made just for him so there is no makers marks on some swords of officers, the only makers mark is on the scabbard that is what also makes this really rear.

send first class photos to professional appraisers, better than some local your not sure of. Even the clothes etc. are worth money

The states historical director is looking at it now and as far as the clothes go, the owner of the property kept them.

Send the photos to a museum at least they will tell you the truth or send the photos to sotherbys at the very least they can give you some history on it. I wonder what it says on the blade. I love stuff like that.

Great find! have you figured out its possible history? Does the uniform and dress give any clues to the age?
Yes the sword was made between 1850 to 1865 the wording on the back is being deciphered by the state historical department.

One of the great things about this site is that people make you look at things you wouldnt have dreamed of getting out of bed this morning.

I would have appraised. Or take it to the Antique Roads Show. That is really cool I have heard of people back then burying their things for safety.

Hey Allen,

I was wondering if you could give me some ideas on what would be a good metal detector to buy? My husband goes with me a lot of times when I am taking pictures and this would be something he could do while with me.

If anyone knows much about them, I would appreciate any and all information.

I hope this isn't highjacking the tread! But I don't know if I start a thread about metal detectors on a photography forum.......
