If you are limited, take the prime 50 and the other zooms. More flexible.

24-70....70-200....300f4 ( the sharpest ). You’ve got the good range covered without to much weight.

Yes. Several small flights. I could take a backpack and a small case I think.

Make sure you ask about weight restrictions too, not just bag size. That will help you define what you can and can not take.

70-200, 200-300, and 50 1.8. And the two bodies. If it were me I'd just take one body, but that's because I don't want to be bogged down by gear. We did a 6week National Park tour with my Nikon and all my lenses. Only used two of the lenses the whole trip and the weight was the issue. PITA You also want to enjoy the trip!

if you have two bodies, take two. The last thing you want is for a body to go down and then you have NO photos at all, it can happen and has unfortunately . I never travel with just one body, that is just risking all your photo efforts. Beside you can keep two different lenses on the two bodies and save time in changing lenses for changing scenes. Cheers.

I am traveling to Shetland Islands and to Lofoten Islands to do landscape and wildlife photograpy. I have the good fortune of having nice Nikon lenses and, now, the challenge of choosing which to take with me. I would ideally like to get all my equipment in one photo backpack. I am taking a Nikon D810 and perhaps a second body, Nikon D 5600.

Here is one way of posing the packing challenge. I could take a set of primes or a set of zoom lenses.

Primes include Nikon 20mm 1.8, 50 mm 1.8, 85mm 1.4, and 300mm F4

Zooms include Nikon 16-35, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, and 200-500 5.6

The Zooms are obviously heavier but of high quality. So what would you pack for this trip?

Buying lenses is easy; just close your eyes and spend the money. Deciding what to take is much more challenging.

thanks for your help!

I’d pack a set of Micro 4/3 gear.

Given that you have money to spend why not buy a couple more bodies then you can take lens/body combinations to cover the range.

20, 85, 200-500

There's no logical reason for it to be all prime or all zoom.

Shetlands will be windy and probably wet. Minimize your lens changing. Bring the zooms exept bring the 20 mm prime instead of the 16-35 zoom.

This is probably the best answer!

Suggest both bodies with the 16-35 and 70-200 lenses.

Take the 24-70 on one body, and the 70-200 on the other.

I would take 16-35 and 85 1.4 and just the D810 body. Mobility>having every focal length covered. Wouldn't want longer unless I had a specific need like wildlife or sports. Just my two cents

I just returned from a two-week trip. I went from Midland, TX to Austin. Austin to NYC. NYC to San Diego. San Diego to Phoenix. Phoenix to Austin. Austin to Midland. I took 3 DSLRs, 200-500, 70-200, 24-70, 105G, SB910 and a small Siri carbon tripod. I had 8 batteries, 1 charger, 15" MacBook Pro. And some other crap. I am 75 and I flew on American. I am so glad I took everything. I often swapped out. I had a shoulder bag to carry what I needed for the day. It was never a problem having so much equipment. I would do it again and I have done it before. I don't have all this equipment so I can see how little I can take on trips.

I did a trek through the Scottish Highlands and Hebrides Islands. Took two cameras and my zooms. Left the primes at home. Scenery, moving animals, lighting etc changes so rapidly on islands that you won't have time to change out primes. Zooms will be quicker to use to recompose and bring in distant subjects. Zooms for sure. I agree check weight limits for your camera gear, beforehand with your air carrier. I won't matter if you are on any ships or ferries. Find what you can comfortably carry. Backpacks were great when I was young and had a young back. Now I carry my gear in a roller ThinkTank bag and stuff a small empty shoulder bag in my luggage to use when I don't need to carry ALL my gear on a given trek. Cheers

20mm, 200-500mm, and pick up a 28-300mm. The 70-200mm is just too heavy to mess with on vacation. The 28-300 is not and will provide very good photos. If you have room, take the 24-70 as well.
