I shoot with a Nikon D90 and primarily have always set the format to JPEG (fine). I use Photoshop Elements 9 to process my exposures. I want to switch formats to RAW so that I have the ability to bring out the best in each exposure. Can I use Elements 9 to process RAW images? Does Elements 9 have the ability to show a histogram for an exposure?

I know the answer to both questions is "Yes" for Photoshop Elements 10 and am pretty sure it also applies to 9. Elements uses a separate program...Adobe Camera Raw or ACR...to process the RAW images. You can see them in the Organizer but must pass through ACR on the way to the Editor. ACR has a histogram. So does the Editor.

You may need to download an update to ACR if it doesn't work immediately with your RAW images. The updates are free.

To refine my question even further, exactly where on Elements would I find the tools to work on RAW files? I see that Elements offers a quick fix and a guided fix, but is there a section for a RAW fix? Also, where can I find histograms on Elements? Thanks for your patience. I'm entering new territory with digital after working with film for 30 years.

When you click on a RAW image in the Organizer and tell it to open the image in the Editor it will automatically take you to ACR first. No choice.

Alternatively you can "open as" a RAW file from the Editor file menu. But then you need to be able to find the image on the hard drive...which may not be so easy. I do wish they had that option available from the Organizer because ACR is a pretty nice editor in its own right.

To MtnMan:

Thanks for the information. I've got a bunch of RAW files to process. Using ACR to process will help a lot.

when you open a raw image in elements it opens in the raw processor which shows the histogram. You can adjust WB, exposure, recovery, fill light, blacks, brightness, contrast, clarity, vibrance and saturation. After adjusting to your satisfaction click open and it then goes to the elements workspace to do other adjustments.

elements will open raw automatically when you click on a raw picture in your files.

Is there any PS buyer who will admit it cost too much and is entirely too involved for the average member of hobby? Like medicine which is not a science, but an art, what we do, with a camera, also , is an art. Just magine how quickly Michalangelo could have finished the ceiling if he had a roller? Where does talent end, and post processing save yr butt?

35 year old Ectachrome. PS could heve erased the motion--shame!

My chuckle for the day!! If only it were so easy. Don't send this to your Democratic Congressperson or there may be a Photoshop Section in the next update of the healthcare law.

Perhaps that might be what our "HOBBY" needs a good catharsis, starting with the snobs that pronounce their bias thru clenched teeth. Mechanics will never replace raw talent!

I do a lot of photography for different businesses. Half the fun of it all is to play with these pictures.

Well, you're right, partially. The post processing in photoshop merely adds another aspect to the art. It is however, expensive and difficult to learn. If one is old and inflexalble and learning challenged, or one of those that thinks that the old ways are the best. Perhaps they should stick with thier brownie starflashes and old film cameras. Ansel Adams did okay with film and black and white after all. Karsh made some good money in Ottawa with film. Most stock photography companies refuse pics with too much pp. But photoshop and pp are a new and different science. There is a place for old fashioned point and shoot and new fangled post processing. Both of your photos could have been helped with photoshop by the way.
