On a recent trip to Chicago, my goal was to get a picture of the skyline that could would be a good conversion to bw. I am pretty much a novice at photography and have never gotten the hang of the bw conversion.

I took the picture at dusk and realized later I should have worked with the white balance. (I think!) The pictures represent the shot out of the camera, with color correction, and converted to bw.

I would like suggestions, instructions, advice, and whatever you want to throw my way.

Thanks

Looks good to me. In Photoshop Elements 10 under Enhance, at the top, there's an option to convert to black and white. Play around with those settings to change the look of the black and white image. That's what I do, anyway. That and Picasa 3 has a cool black and white conversion tool called Filtered Black and White. Check that out as well if you have it, or you can download it for free through Google. Lightroom 4 has a good Black and White conversion tool as well. I'm sure others on the forum have some good suggestions as well.

the first photo i like because you didnt cut off the tall building on the right (the other 2 pics you did ) yes you could have changed your white balance but the editing program can fix it also .
Don't forget about the twilight hour you could get a much bluer sky also .

Just dont forget to remove the color completely in PSE10 then convert to b & w , i never use the b&w in the camera always the edit program, then go to your levels and play with the sliders to see what works .

Your on the right track just watch cutting off buildings etc. you could probably had cut a little of the lake off by raising your camera slightly i think the tree is distracting also maybe just moving a little either way .
Just some friendly advise hope you don't mind.

Where did you take these from the Planetarium or near there it looks like that area. If you are in Chicago for awhile take the River Boat Architectural Tour from the Wrigley Building. This will afford you to see some really cool buildings up close.

Good Shots BTW but I do not care for the B&W of the skyline. It does not do it justice!!

Thanks, I didn't even catch that I had cut off the building in the crop. I appreciate anything and all

I was over by the Shedd Aquarium. I was trying to get black and white because that is what my son requested. Young guy-they all seem to like the bw.

Thanks for your comments

Another question: I am not really sure how to even phrase it. Since you mentioned you don't care for the skyline in bw, is there something you look for in a scene that tells you it would be a good bw photo?

Yes, I would agree with your assessment concerning the white balance, particularly with the present lighting; but your color corrected shot came out nicely and probably is very close to what you remember in your "mind's eye" as actually seeing at the time! I do think the skyline, harbor shots from the Shedd Aquarium/Field Museum vantage points provide some excellent views of what I personally consider one of the "premier" skylines in the U.S.! Thanks for posting, I enjoyed viewing your shots!

I did this in PS5, but I think Elements has levels and that's what I used here. Using your first image, bringing the slider from the left to the beginning of dark, then right slider in a ways, then I moved the middle slider to the left to expose the detail of the photo. Give it a try.

I applied effects from OnOne's Perfect Effects to the image I posted prior.

I really like the effect. I am not familiar with that program. I will need to look into it.

Do you color correct before converting to BW?

No I don't color correct before converting to B/W. I again use OnOne for that also. These are all plugin's for Photoshop or whatever other programs they can be applied to.
