Recently joined, have D3400, new to photography. Am not satisfied with the kit telephoto lens, 70-300mm, and am considering trading in both kit lenses....the above and the 18-55mm, as reviews both here and elsewhere, seem to indicate the Tamron would do a better job at both ends of the spectrum. Does anyone have a reason to NOT make the trade? Being new, and living on social security, I a) don’t want to jump ahead of myself, and b) can not afford to get it wrong.
My complaint with the kit telephoto relates to not being able to get close enough bird shots. The only drawback I know of trading is perhaps taking more time to focus. Thanks for any advice......one more thing.....does the Tamron actually do a good job with macro photography as well...
Sounds too good to be true, and when that happens it usually is not true, thus my skepticism.

Hello

I have used a Tamron 18-270mm lens for years. Here are a few pictures from it. ... In a few weeks when I have the $640.00 for it I plan on getting the 18-400 for the Canon. ... Most of these pictures just needed

cropping.

Keep the 18-55. It is a fine lens even though inexpensive. You will not get enough for it to justify trading it.

Thanks for the input.....after watching the video, I think I for sure need to keep the 18-55, if nothing else indoors.....they are only offering 35.00

I recently asked the same question about the Tamron 18-400. I also have the D3400, bought the Tamron about two months ago, and rarely ever use the other lenses...well worth the investment.

I received mine yesterday and I use a Nikon d7100. I am impressed. Here are 2 photos I took at a local grist mill park. Is a small spillway at 18mm and 400mm, straight from the camera, no cropping or processing.

I have also heard good things about that 18-400.(you should read the reviews on that lens at B&H) BUT, I will continue to shoot wildlife with my Nikon 200-500. Again, as an all purpose lens, that 18-400 would be hard to beat. But, to be honest, if your not satisfied with the 70-300 (which is a good lens) then maybe, just maybe, their might be something missing from the technique of the photographer, and not the lens. Which might indicate you might not be satisfied with the 18-400 either.

Purchased the 18-400 a couple of months ago. Use as stand alone travel lens. With that lens, a CP and ND8, I’m good to go with just about anything. Really happy with it. I do have other lenses for specialized work.

Does the light loss of the CP and/or ND8 kill the autofocus? Once upon a time the autofocus needed f8 or lower-more light, to operate properly. The f stop of the lens added to the light loss from the filters has me concerned if these filters can be used and retain autofocus. As ISO ranges of digital cameras has increased has the light required for autofocus been reduced?

Thanks,
George.

Would you consider posting the full resolution version of this? I'm so tempted to buy the lens too, but I've found it hard to find quality versions of photos from the lens. Most have been downsized. Thanks.
