Today’s gear is so good, that we are the weak link.
The following technological changes have occurred since I purchased my first SLR
(1) body able to control aperture - making 'shutter priority' and 'program' modes feasible
(2) auto focus
(3) stabilization
(4) digital
It is hard to take a technically bad picture today, but composition is still up to us.
Wait and see after 2-4 years from now.
Mirror-less most certainly have a place now because of the reasons you will read about.
The technology just keeps getting better and better for both kinds so the beauty of all of this is the variety we have open to us.
Ain't no way in hell DSLR's are going to be the dinosaurs of yester-year anytime soon. But, Mirror-less is gaining in technology and acceptance because they meet the needs in size and weight for many people right now.
Again, I have said the many times, ain't it nice to have choices and variety ?
Actually the mirror reflects the image into a plane of a 5 (penta*) sided prism.
When you look into the view finder you are looking at the image in the prism.
The mirror, (before the shutter release is pressed) is at about a 45 degree angle between the lens and sensor
reflecting the projected image up into the prism contained in that big bulge on top of your SLR.
When you press the shutter button the mirror flips up and clears the light path from lens to sensor.
And that's why, (with an SLR) particularly if you have a long exposure,
you will see the viewfinder go blank for the duration of the shutter event... That's the operational theory
of the SLR viewfinder... an "optical" viewfinder.
Mirrorless cameras delete both the prism and the mirror as well as the mechanical
hardware that makes the mirror flip up... and add a little electronic "display" that you look at through
the viewfinder... an "EVF... electronic" view finder.
*Probably why Pentax chose Pentax as their brand name. ;-)
