So, 51.5% of what and 83.5% of what. That can't be a percentage of all images captured. The two together will come to 135%.

Apparently 51.5% of the winners were Nikon DSLRs.
That leaves at most 32.0% for Canon DSLRs.

I think the whole DSLR / Mirrorless thing has been beaten to a pulp over at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-523580-1.html Over 300 comments and 12,500 views and still rising. Maybe we should give that a rest for a week or so and just focus on Canon vs Nikon.

From the way you wrote this, no one who didn't already know would guess that you're the OP of that particular thread.

I agree. It only looks at a small segment of the photographic community. It was a worldwide contest though, and a segment that uses their gear a bit harder than the weekend warriors.

Yep, what you say makes sense. I only posted my rather long post on the subject because sometimes people read these things and jump to conclusions based on limited data. Nor should one take for fact what I wrote. It was just my estimate based on my observations.

I tend to shoot with the camera I have in hand. I could give a rats a$$ about the brand!

Last year it was just the opposite - 2/3 by Canon and 1/3 by Nikon. I notice that this year, the top 3 cameras (Nikon D5, Nikon D810 and Canon 5D3) were tied with 11 each. It will interesting to see what happens next year...

DSLR today has all bells and whistles you can ever use available the mirrorless is just a new trend and will be a while to get to a more "add-on" stage.

The cameras are being developed and add-ons are not in full supply.

You choice. Canon and Nikon are the leaders in SLR's The determination of Mirrorless is to be determined and will the new Mirrorless lenses etc work with the future stuff ??????

That seems rather restrictive. Is this an Authoritarian form?

Like it says, "photos in the World Press Photo 2018 contest"

51.5% shot with Nikon
83.5% shot with DSLR (all brands)

Nikon Rumors has the article, the full breakdown, and a link to all the winning pictures by category.

So the Nikon owners enter more contests is all this shows.
Data is incomplete.

Adding the two percentages makes no logical sense. They are completely different things. Nikon DSLRs fit in both categories so you are counting them twice.

The answer to that is simple. I read the original post incorrectly.

Please do a little more research before stating things like this.

Micro 4/3 cameras have been around for about a decade. There are around 95 lenses available. Some of those are amazing. The top models have many of the most advanced features on the planet, including better 4K video than any dSLRs made. Micro 4/3 is the ONLY popular mirrorless platform that can save you significant weight and bulk across a system of bodies and lenses.

Sony has rocketed to the #2 best-seller, largely on the strength of its APS-C and full frame mirrorless options. They also do 4K video better than dSLRs.

Fujifilm has amazing lenses, arguably the best JPEG engine on the planet, and great ergonomics.

Yes, dSLRs will be with us for quite awhile. But remember film? It was pretty much perfected by the late 1990s. 15 years later, Kodak was spiraling the drain, firing tens of thousands of good people, as their film and paper customers switched to digital cameras, smartphones, and Internet sharing sites.

Paradigms shift! Things change. Perfected technologies are quickly abandoned in favor of The Next Big Thing. When adoption rates reach a tipping point, look out!

Can't use link in OP, but Nikon Rumors would point you towards the article.

Since it is often a topic of conversation I figured some folks might find it interesting, some not.

Are there any "press photographers" any more?

I heard The Daily Planet let Jimmy Olsen go in one of their cost-cutting moves. Clark Kent and Lois Lane are now having to carry cameras to make their own stills and video clips.

Used to be that a news org. would send a staff reporter and a staff photographer to cover a story. Now after repeated layoffs they've eliminated most of the photo staff and are relying on freelancers (Peter Parker), microstock (cheap), freebies that the readers submit for the thrill of getting a "photo credit" (which still won't buy gas or a meal, last time I checked), or...

..."Reporters with cameras". And everyone knows that reporters come from "The Dark Side of The Force".... So it really should come as no surprise they'd use Nikons!

Might be more revealing to look at pro-level Sports Photography instead, where there are still a lot of actual staff pros employed. Can't get away with shoving a DLSR with a 400mm f/2.8 on into the hands of a sports reporter who only knows how to set a camera to "point n shoot"!

Your suggestion to look at sports photography 'instead' seems silly. Looking at sports photography in addition to ..., would make more sense. But it too would be looking at a narrow segment of photography.

If you check out the results from the contest mentioned you will see it extended way beyond Metropolis. Things might not be the same in the rest of the world.
