If I want one I would simply buy the Nikon one.
In my opinion, you cannot beat the OEM Nikon version of the grip, it is built like a rock, like the camera.
I have had a couple of 3rd party grips for my D7100, and the OEM, while more expensive is absolutely the best. No issues, fits perfectly and looks the part.
BTW - one of my Neewer grips ended up with electrical issues, the camera was always flashing the green power on light when the camera was just sitting on the desk, like the battery was disconnecting... not one flash when an OEM grip was used.
As for batteries - you can't lose with oem Nikon batteries, but I have also used Wasabi and Vivitar batteries with no problems in my D7100.
I prefer a built in vertical grip, but would buy the OEM battery and grip if I needed one. Your needs and mileage may vary.
Best,
Todd Ferguson
Go for the Nikon vertical grip. Not cheap, but worth it. Well made and rock solid attachment to camera. I have one on my 7200, and I love it.

Check out KEH for a used Nikon grip. That's what I did, I bought a used Canon grip from KEH for $75 with a good rating. Grip looks and works as good as new.
The Nikon one will be built better than the others, and you'll have the peace of mind that it's a Nikon grip rather than a third party one, which may have had shortcuts made in its construction.
Do a search on eBay there are new and used Nikon battery grips at reasonable pricing.

I agree. I have heard of problems ranging from electronics issues to the tripod bushing coming out. You get what you pay for.

I kind of like cameras with built in grip. Like the Nikon Dx series or Canon 1D series. Even back in the film days I like the F5 with it built in grip. However, with camera that doesn't have a built in grip I wouldn't care for the grip as a grip because I never use it. I would buy the grip if I need extra battery or most importantly that with some camera the grip provides high frame rate.
