On her first outing with her new camera and lens shooting my grandson's basketball game, my daughter selected ISO 12,800, 1/500th, and f4.5, shooting shutter priority at 100mm throughout the game. The results came out surprisingly well. I did detect some noise in faces, so my suggestion to her for the next game is to cut both the ISO and shutter speed in half. Otherwise, I was pleased with sharpness. Jerseys and writing on the basketball were clear.
Due to forum rules I cannot post a photo in my original post.
I did brighten the original just a bit and after cropping the original did a little sharpening.

I would not recommend lowering the shutter speed if you are looking for sharp images. I would recommend using a faster and shorter lens. Your choice of lenses is way to slow for indoor sports. Best of luck.
Looks good, I would crop a little but that is my preference. I shoot a lot of basketball at the local community college and the lighting, as most junior colleges and high schools, suck.

Look at the ball in the original, cj. How much sharper do you want. The problem, as far as I can tell, is that the ISO was just too high, at ISO 12,800, causing a problem with the faces. Everything else seemed to be just fine. Next game she's going to try halving both the ISO and shutter speed.
BTW....f4.5 is less than a stop from 2.8.

BTW - You're incorrect @ that F stop calc. I'll just save my thoughts on the rest. Please, carry on!

Ok...it's a little MORE than one stop.

I don't know how the D7500 behaves in practice. I am quite sure that the future of sports photography is in this sort of kit - using "insanely high" ISO settings instead of pricey f/2.8 or better lenses, so I'm interested in seeing how this experiment progresses.
Here is a photo from today, cutting ISO in half to 6000 and slowing shutter speed to 1/250th, 100mm and f4.5. The lighting problem seems to be solved, but focus around the faces is a problem. I'm going to consider what settings we'd need to use to up the aperture to f8. Perhaps that would help the focus situation. I'm trying to decide if 1/125 would be fast enough to stop the action. Any experience at this setting would be helpful.
