Tiny Blue Flower

While walking our dog in the yard, I came across this tiny blue flower about the size of the tip of my little finger. Housebound all winter long, I couldn't resist taking a photo of it. I suspect that it is a weed of some type.

Very nice. That is a native wildflower. It is called "Missouri violet" down your way, Viola sororia. "Common blue violet" is another name for it.

Blenheim Orange, thank you for identifying this tiny blue flower for me. This gives me a perfect excuse now when my wife tells me that I need to cut the yard because it's getting out of control. I can tell her that our yard is now a refuge for "Missouri Wild Flowers" and should not be disturbed..!

That plant does make for a great ground cover and it will out-compete weeds.

The three different flowers on this thread make for a good illustration of one of the keys for plant identification - number and arrangement of flower petals. the Speedwell has four petals. The Periwinkle (also called Myrtle) has five symmetrical petals. Violets have five irregular petals.
