Saving a Raw image

I have always shot in JPG. With all the talk of Raw, and now that PSE10 and Corel PSPPX4 both handle Raw files, I decided I would give it a try. So I set my 450D to shoot in JPG/Raw.

When I put the SD card in the reader and PSE10 downloaded the files (I told it to not change the file names), I only see the JPGs. The PSE10 dialog box in Editor when I try to open a raw file says that it is displaying "Files of Type: All Formats", so I'm con-fus-ed. How do I download the Raw files to get into PSE10 to edit them?

AHA! Apparently my Xsi 450D is not saving Raw files to the SD card: the setting on my camera for the "Quality" option is RAW + (Highest quality JPG). But in looking at the contents of the SD card, there is only one file present ... the JPG.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is there something I am not doing in making the selections on Quality, or is there someplace else?

I had this problem and finally resolved it a couple of weeks ago. I too use a 450D. The manual seems to miss a vital point in explaining how to select Raw+Jpeg or Raw only.
Once you have the menu open for selecting file type, use the cross keys on the back of the body, move the box up to your choice. (this next bit seems to be omitted from my manual) NEXT, again using the cross keys move the box to the right hand column, e.g. over the "RAW+Jpeg". Press set.
You should be good to go. Just take a couple of test shots and see if you have both RAW and Jpeg.
Best of luck.

Yes, in any menu, unless there is something on the screen saying otherwise, you must press "set" to save your changes. Otherwise it ignores your changes.

Thanks! I had assumed that RAW+Jpeg was already set because when I opened "Quality", that is what appeared. Normally the active option is the one displayed, so .... But I did as you suggested and Voila! There was a slight change in the menu display ("RAW+ (large Jpeg symbol) appeared just to the left side of the menu header) and when I did a test shot, both CR2 and Jpeg were present. I appreciate your help. Now I just need to see what all the talk has been about and if the end result is worth the extra PP. Looks good so far.

To see the difference check this comparison:

raw images will not look as good as a jpg out of the camera, but with a few adjustments they will look much better than the identical jpg.
