What are U using for a quick and simple point and shoot camera when not using a DSLR
If I had a smart phone, I would use it. My son gets excellent photos with his iPhone 6+
1) Smartphone (convenience)
2) olympus Tough (versatility)
3) Sony rx100iv (quality)
4) Gopro 6 (video, versatility)
...
Have 1 and 4. Almost bought 2 and 3.
I have a Canon SX710HS. Shut down, it's about cigarette pack size. It has a built-in zoom plus digital zoom. In Best Buy, I can read the price tags on the other side of the store, then put the lens within one inch of a sales tag and focus on that. The newer 720 and 730 have even longer zoomes, and more features. At Disney World, Epcot, I sat the camera on a concrete post by the English Pub and got a really nice photo of the Mexican Pavilion on the opposite end of the lake. I have seen landscape photos posted here on the Hog that are real wall hangers. The only thing mine does not do is RAW. It is excellent at low light. I now know what all is in the shadows and under the walk ramps at all the rides and I have an Beautiful side portrait of my wife, taken in very low light. I might trade it for a newer model, but I'd not ever give it away.
I carry a Canon G1X III pretty much all the time.
It's relatively small, loaded with features, weather sealed, build pretty sturdy, has 24 mpx and dual pixel AF, and it produces really good images. The only real down side to it is it's kinda
pricey.
My "serious" cameras are both Nikons (D3300 and D610) but my go-to point-and-shoots are Canon SX50 and Canon SX710. There is a newer version of the SX50, the SX60. I carried those Canons on trips to Africa and Costa Rica because of the weight restrictions. They are extremely powerful and flexible, especially given the size and weight. Their video buttons are also easy to find and use. The only real issue is when you have the digital zoom turned on; you can take pics of stuff a very (very!) long way off, but lose sharpness, so I tend to keep the digital zoom turned off unless I really need and want it (and, it's very quick and easy menu click). Also, I set these two cameras on the athlete icon most of the time because that seems to minimize the auto-focus issues, for example in which the background is more important to the camera than your subject.

Sony Cybershot DSC-W290. 2.25 in X 3.75 in. Weighs 1.1 lb. Cannot even remember when I bought it, but it takes a great photo, fits in any pocket, has several presets and takes video. This way when I travel overseas and want to go lite, this is better than an IPhone that could be confiscated at a border, theirs our ours. It was discontinued, but there are still some on Amazon for under $100

I use my Canon SX50. However, the camera I always have with me is my iPhone.

The D3400 is not a point and shoot... read the OPs post

Good recommendation
I'm wondering why 1) those who ask about Point and Shoot Cameras and 2) most who reply, rarely consider that size might matter? I realize that point and shoot cameras vary in size, isn't size a consideration? It seems that very few people raise this when posting -- some do, but it seems not many. Are people not bringing this up because size doesn't matter or are assumptions being made that some consider incorrectly that Point and Shoot Cameras are compact?

I always carry my Canon G7X. P&S plus manual and a 1.8/2.8 24-100 lens. Very small, slightly thick, fits in an ample pocket.
