Clean it when you can see a lot of spots in the pictures, take a picture of the blue sky in the morning and then inspect it in Lightroom (turn on Visualize->Spots); if you see a lot of spot it is time to clean. However I've never hd to clean my DSLRs, however mirrorless I had to clean it many times (in DSLRs the mirror protects the sensor).

I have a question just got SDLR Canon rebel this last Christmas. Have taken over 700 photos so far. But how often should a person clean the sensor of the camera. Is there a time frame or number of photos that to help a person know when to have it done? Very careful when changing lens, and do it in a time order fashion to do it quickly, never change lens in a windy condition, always seek shelter. So even if a person never changes the lens, will the sensor still need cleaning at some time due to the humidity and the elements.

I have not cleaned my sensor and I have close to 400,000 pics on it, but so far there is no reason to clean it, as it has never gotten dirty yet (and I change lenses many a times daily)!

amfoto1 Thanks for the reply and info, you have reminded me of some things I have forgot about maintaining camera performance, always have cap on when not in use. Sometimes try to take picture with it on!! Dumbfounded ME!! And yes being very worried about something that is not required as much as I think! Camera is Canon Rebel T6 I believe can clean sensor through settings but must be done manually by selecting it. I learned a long time ago not to used compressed air in a can, the hard way in a darkroom. Never thought about the Q-tips never would anyway.
Thanks so much for the info.
