What are the opinions about the Nikon D3400? The price seems right and I don't care about having two SD card slots.

What do you mean, what are the options?
For around $500 you get a pretty decent little DSLR. Its got a nice 24 mpx image sensor for really good resolution and it doesn't have an aa filter so the images are nice and sharp. Personally I'd spend a few hundred more and get a reconditioned D7200, but that's me.
The D3400 is a good starter DSLR but it won't give you the performance of a D5000 or D7000 series camera.

Major difference that you will notice is the 11 focus points vs. the 39 (in the 5xxx series) 53 (in the 7xxx series). I have the d3400 and am using it to learn and explore. If I had known then what I know now...I probably would have found a refurbished d5300 from Cameta Camera.

If you have experience and/or plan on getting away from the pre-programmed or "auto" mode, I'd suggest a refurbished d5300 or d7200. Otherwise, the D3400 is a great little camera that will give you 90% of the daily performance most people will need. Save your pennies and get upgraded (fast/VR) lenses unless you really plan on getting involved. my $0.02

Unfortunately, Nikon eliminated the ultrasonic sensor cleaner in the D3400. All of Nikon's recent DSLR cameras have had that feature. Its built-in flash has only one-half the power of the flash in the D3300. I would probably look for a new D3300. Amazon often has brand new cameras that are one and sometimes two generation behinds the current model. If you get the D3400 you might want to get a filtered blower for when dust appears in photos. I got the Koh Global Hepa Jet Air II filtered blower. It has a large hepa filter, an anti-static filter, a one-way check valve, and a medical grade PVC bulb. Most blowers have a rubber bulb that can shed fine particles. The PVC bulb won't do that.

I was a former Nikon film advocate with no zoom lenses, only a set of primes from 28 to 300 mm. When I traded that in I held every Nikon model and decided I actually liked the plastic D3400 feel. The price at the time I bought it was under $500 bundled with 2 zooms and an assortment of accessories including a 32 gig card, spare battery, etc. I decided between the weight and feel and the cost, it was a good investment.

The focus points are really not such an issue unless you depend on averaging focus. If you shoot more spot focused images you will not feel that you need more for matrix, etc.

It took a while to realize that the image on the viewfinder isn't exactly that on the file, that there is about 5 percent not shown. That drove me nuts until I found that it was not just me. I was used to a built in focussing aide which doesn't exist. I find that even when I use a magnifier eyepiece, I don't trust the auto focus. I would prefer being to see the focus myself and not depend upon the auto focus. I do understand that the upper models allow a change in the focusing screen.

I don't regularly use even a third of the capabilities of the camera. Yet, although I have tried many.

I have posted many photos I took with the camera. I am still learning. The manual and the book D3400 for dummies ate helpful, as are utube, but I learned better from these after I blundered on something of heard from someone something I read but didn't pay attention to.when I first read the book or manual.

Don't rule out a D5xxx or D7000 refurbished. You get more camera at a reduced price.

Some comparison sites.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

The D3400 is the successor to the D3300 which has been discontinued, but still available to buy. It is the better choice IMO. A previous thread by CO, pretty much explained some shortcomings of the camera. If you like SnapBridge, then the camera is for you. The D3300 does not have that feature. But, still the D3400 is worth the price. An entry-level bargain DSLR.

3400 is a very good entry and or beginners unit.

If this is your first venture with real cameras you'll be very happy.

The D5500, which I own, is extremely lightweight and I love the fully
articulated touch screen.

Consider it is an entry camera BUT it has 24 megapixels for plenty of resolution. If it has the features that you can use in your photography I do not see the reasons to skip buying one.

I have the 3400 and love the little guy. It is lite and takes great pictures. I mostly use my d800 but i won't get rid of that little red D3400 as it is great for just walking around when you don't want to lug a big heavy D800. It will not shoot bracketed photos but who cares. It's got some cool special effects built in that are fun to shoot with.

If you photograph stationary or slowly moving subjects (landscapes, people standing or walking, etc.), the camera is perfectly adequate. Better to buy the D3400 + high quality lenses than to buy a more expensive crop sensor camera + lower quality lenses.

Thanks to all for the input. I've bought the D3400 and ordered the book, "D3400 for Dummies" as I don't much like the little manual that came with it.
