Be aware that if you shoot panoramas you don't need a wide angle lens.

Considering buying a Prime Lens for Landscape Photography. Considering a 35MM F2 and a 25MM F2.8. Which in your opinion is the BEST for Landscape Photography and why?

Thanks in advance for your opinion.

I would think you would be better served to visit the lens manufactures sites and check out their suggestions for a landscape lens then based on your evaluations you have made the right decision for you.

I usually use a 16-35 f/2.8 for landscape. Far more versatile and lighter than carrying multiple primes and for all intents and purposes, just as sharp.

My favourites are the older Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 and the AF 16mm f/2.8D fisheye. I do my panos with the AFS 24-70mm f/2.8G

I use my 16-85. The versatility give you much more. On a trip to the Mighty 5 in southern Utah it was the 16-85 lens that gave me many more "keepers" than my 10-24.

I like the 35mm angle of view for landscape photography. Its view is not exaggerated like those of extreme wide angles that also have their place in landscape scenery. When I talk about the usefulness of the 35mm lens I am taking about using it in a full frame camera.
Like others here I use my 12-24 f4 AF-S with my full frame between 18-24mm without vignettes.

35mm. Speed doesn’t matter, but get sharpest model you can afford.

Just my two-cents:

After purchasing a 20mm last year, and later realizing I only used it sparingly, I went back and checked the data on my three “landscape only” trips from last year. Most of the shots I used later were in the 35-55mm focal range. A few were from 70-85mm, and only two at 24mm and below. Almost all were shot with a 24-85 zoom. A real switch for me since I’m still learning to say “zoom lens,” without “damn” at the beginning.

Oh yeah—I haven’t taken time to learn how to stitch...well, with a computer; it was an art form with an enlarger. My 50mm and above are for viewing as single shots.

Why spend extra money on a f2. when we usually shoot f11 or so for landscape?

Depending on preference for FX or DX, note that the 16-80 DX 2.8 is specifically paired (packaged) with the D500 for landscape and I hear rave reviews from friends.
Personally, I am using the 16-35 FX 4.0 (effective 24-54) along with the 28-300 (effective 42-450) FX 3.5 and am happy. I know you are sometimes compromising a little sharpness with a zoom, but I like the versatility. The 17-35 FX 2.8 is probably the best for this, but too expensive for my blood at $2K.

For 24 x 36 format and larger, 50mm and up - period!

Im wondering why? I usually shoot with L class canon 16-35 for landscape. Wondering why you feel 50mm and up is better....

I use an 11-24, 24-70, and 70-200 and they seem to be all I need.

I don't think I'd go for a prime for landscapes. A wide zoom is more practical and versatile. I bought a Sigma 10-20mm and it has proved to be great.

21 Milvus. $$$ but you won;t regret it- has excellent weather resistance built in... because interesting good landscapes are about unusual times and circumstances- not high noon, with full sun. .. dramatic unusual times of day when everyone else is still in bed, or eating dinner. and out of the weather.

Images printed from wide angle lens give the impression you could stick your head into the frame and look around. 50 mm is about what your eye sees without peripheral or eye movement... mimics how you see- but you can move your eyes. Stitching images form lets say a portrait length lens is very effective, but present issues- like careful set up, nodal equipment, , things don't always stay still long enough to shoot- move- shoot- move- shoot -move -shoot -move- shoot- move . and finally distance compression. you don;t get the essence of distance or space.

Primes are superior IMHO, some zooms are excellent. All i ever really seem to want is wider, but the 21 is about the threshold of distortion on edges - perhaps a tinch past it. If i wanna get closer, I can crop ( resolution of my D800e gives this option ) or move closer, or swap lenses.

What Gene51 said about distortion and illumination should be considered before taking the leap into a purchase. There is a section here at UHH "Panoramas" that has many images posted that have created by stitching, take a look, a wide angle isn't the end all/be all for landscape photography. If you have a 50mm or 85mm (or a zoom) give multiple image stitching a try. It isn't at all difficult. There are several software programs available that will do the stitching with Microsoft's free "image Composite Editor" being a favorite of many.
