Perhaps to the "toppa Tam" - Mount Tamalpius just across the bridge (Golden Gate) gives a splendid view of the bridge and SF Bay and SF. Definite photo stop.

Bodega Bay, Lighthouse at Point Arena, Pygmy forest in Mendocino, the steam train into the redwoods at Ft. Bragg.

I do not mean to be critical but I wish to offer a word of caution. In good weather this is a beautiful drive, but it can be treacherous in the rain, fog and wind.
This area was just hammered with heavy rain and there is more rain predicted during the time you will be there.

This sounds like a great plan but you may not have given yourself near enough time nor considered the weather at this time of year.
If you encounter bad weather and any road closure it is a long drive around to get out and you may not make it back in time for your flight.

My son and I are planning to drive Rt 1 along the coast in a rented convertible mustang.

Flying into Oakland on the 15th. Then starting the drive from San Francisco on April 16th, heading north. Returning to San Francisco on the 19th to catch a evening flight back to Maryland out of Oakland.
We plan to spend 3 1/2 days on the road.

I am interested in suggestions on photo opportunities and how far up the coast I should plan between overnight stays.

Thanks,
Jim

Not to be picky, but US 1 is on the east coast, US 101 is on the west coast. Wouldn't want you getting lost. US Routes and Interstates .....odd numbers North/South, even numbers East/West.
Routes start 1 on east coast, 2 in the North . Interstates run 4 in Florida, and 90 in North. 96 runs Detroit to Grand Rapids. Interstate 1 is west coast, 95, East coast. If Interstate has 3 numbers,, say 275 or 375....even numbers first, it.connects to other Interstate. If odd number first, it's a spur. Just some useless trivia on a gloomy Sunday afternoon.

Stay at Bodega Bay Lodge and Spa and day trip north, south to Pt. Reyes and east to the wine country. We do this twice a year from Reno.

Highway 1 on the west coast is a state highway. I've driven it and bicycled it. Don't recommend the bike, but a motorcycle would work. Dillon Beach is in Marin Co.

Dillon Beach - 52
Dillon Beach - 52...

Thought that might be. Most state roads are....well...roads as opposed to Route which is Federal. Thanks, I learned something today. Sidebar: Michigan State roads have no order.

Jim, you’ve never said what kind of photography you’re looking for and want to shoot, or if your son is also a photographer or will just be your 3rd wheel while you have fun.
Is this your first trip or his as well?

If you want to get some good panoramic shots of the San Francisco skyline, (ANYTIME OF DAY OR NIGHT), go to the top of Mt. Davidson. You can't miss it. Its the one with the big cross on top. You will get some beautiful vistas for the San Francisco skyline which includes both the Golden Gate bridge and the Bay bridge. In between you'll get the embarcadero and the financial district. You'll get some shots that are fit for a picture post card.

The Albion River Inn is just a couple of miles north of the intersection of 128 and 1; it's about 7 miles south of Mendocino. It's a great place to stay for a night or two - great restaurant and great views of the Mendocino headlands. The restaurant has great food, wine, and serves flights of single malt scotches for tasting.

That’s CA route 1. US 1 is on the east coast.

OP is flying into OAK and driving Route 1, no chance of him getting lost out on the east coast.

Driving North across the Golden Gate, allow a lot of time for traffic, the Bay area is super congested. Cut over to Stinson Beach and head north. Bodega Bay is incredible, has some great places to stay, and if you're a Hitchcock fan, The Birds was filmed there. Point Reyes is awesome, I've stayed in the Tamales Bay Resort in Inverness. Next day, north to Jenner/Fort Ross (must see) and Timbercove. The drive north of Jenner takes a long time, as the Hwy is very, very twisty. But beautiful. At Point Arenas, the San Andres Fault marches out into the Pacific which is just incredible.

28 miles north of Pt. Arena is Hwy 128, which drives through the Navarro River Redwoods and through some beautiful wine country to Hwy 101 in Cloverdale.

There you go, a 3 day trip. Bring sweaters, and a jacket. The coastal weather this time of the year alternates between Fog, some drizzle and sunshine.

DM me it you want more details.

... what he said. Drive up to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. See the Roosevelt Elk herd. Also the coastal redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants. In the park don't miss Fern Canyon.

The Little River Inn in Little River is a nice place to stay. It's on the coast and has a nice 9 hole golf course that runs through the redwoods. Or try the Heritage House, the site of the 1978 Alan Alda & Ellen Burstyn movie, "Same Time Next Year", located in Mendocino. It's an amazingly beautiful location overlooking the rocky cliffs of the Pacific Ocean.

You might enjoy an overnight stop in Mendocino.

If you ever watched "Murder, She Wrote" the background scenes were filmed there because Mendocino looks like a New England coastal town.
