Presently I only own two lenses for my Nikon D800 and I love them both. One is a 24-85 f3,5. The other is a 105 Micro f2.8. Both do what I want them to do and do it well.
What do you mean by free lensing? I have never heard of that term.

For years my standby has always been 20mm Nikon, 55mm micro Nikon, and 85mm Nikon, I'm old fashion.

I'd like to open a discussion about tools of choice. Are there any lenses that you keep going back to because you love the images that you get with it? I could be any kind of lens... a macro, a normal prime, even a walk-around lens. Just say why and maybe post a sample or two.
I was leaning towards macro in the autumn - I use a Tokina 100 f/2.8 for Nikon or a Nikon 60mm Micro, but I really love my broken 50mm f/1.4 that I use for free-lensing. It's not an every day lens, but I always get something interesting out of it so I like to play with it when I am feeling creatively stymied.

I don't really have a favorite lens. It's like having a favorite wine..... It depends on my mood, the weather, the light, the subject and the time. My most used lens is a Fuji 18-135mm (on my XT1) gives me the flexibility I need. Today I feel like my 40mm Konica Hexanon on my XE2 but I might change my mind.
24-135 or 20-40. Film rigs.

On the Nikon digital, the 28-300.
I haven't figured out a favorite lens for the Nikon FE.
I always loved the 24mm 2.8 on the FE.
Which is my favorite child? My lenses are all my babies.
I shoot from a scooter so use my Tamron 18-250. Loved my Lester Dine when I could walk well.

I have several FAVORITE lens for a particular situation "LENS".
Over time, I believe that my favorite lens has been the one I most recently acquired. My reasoning is that I only acquire a new lens when I perceive a need that is not filled by the current lenses in my inventory. As my photographic interests change, my gear must align with my current needs. That being said, my current favorite lens is the Nikkor AF-s 18-140. It has a useful range and is a fast and sharp lens. It pairs well with my D5500 as a light walk-around combo.

I pre purchased a Nikon D 7000 when it first was announced and soon after purchased a Sigma 24-70 2.8. The Sigma soon became my favorite. I am still using both but I am now ready for a new camera.
My favorite all around lens is my Canon 18-135mm. Very versitile. The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is that it is not an f2.8. Then it would be perfect.
