As you might guess from my Avitar, I know the AeroShell pilots, have ridden with most of the pilots several times and have acted as their photographer at several shows.

I believe that they actually would like the down angle better, as they are not afraid of pointing straight down (I have one video from the back seat during a hammerhead that is particularly spectacular). A photo judge may feel differently, but aerobatic pilots like "unusual angles".

Hope you get to see one of AeroShell's night shows, as they really make for some great shots!

I've seen them a few times at Oshkosh including last summer, but I have too much pixilation from high ISO to get any really good pics, Here's one example (below): If you have FB, check out some of my pics from various airshows.

in our local photo club end-of-year contest. We can submit up to 3, color or B/W, taken within the prior fiscal year (since May 1, 2017). Pretty much most of them I've taken during this period of time were taken at Oshkosh (world-famous major aviation convention). I thought this would be a good one...I hear that the guest judge likes vivid colors. Pics can be any size, but must be mounted on an 11x14 board. Opinions?

Nice shot. Enter and see what happens.

I like both. But then, I'm neither an aerial expert nor a judge of same.

Good shot as it is but it can be improved if you add a little more sky to the bottom and right of the frame and crop a little on the top. It would look like this.

I was just thinking...my EAA.org Picture of the Month desktop calendar pic in June 2012 had the aircraft pointing down (Super Salto jet sailplane - autographed about a year later by the pilot), and as I already used up 2 sheets or 13x19 paper printing the tweaked pic (settings were messed up on the first one and got like a 3x5 print on the big sheet in the bad direction) I'm going to use the descending image. Contest is April 10th, with Dutch treat dinner beforehand. I think I'm going to use 2 other prints from the same airshow as my other entries, probably 8x10s - an F-35 in afterburner and a B/A formation shot.

I think your tweak helped. I also think you need to sharpen and spread the tonal range of the aircraft for a really good shot. I'd lower the sky saturation a bit, and tweak also the smoke--all of these together, until you get a pic that really pops with its contrasts whiteout looking phony.

Gary, I'm coming to this discussion a bit late and see several people have made helpful suggestions. Looking at the image at 100%, consider some more noise processing on the sky and adjusting the saturation and / or vibrance of the blue in the sky as Bob noted.

Do you have any more options with more blur in the prop? Does the submission have to be cropped to a specific ratio? I alway support a tight crop, but I wonder if a bit more blue around the planes is an option?

For the sky, you might try downloading some trial software, if you don't have a specific tool, to see what works to clean-up the sky a bit more for the noise.

I like the 2nd brighter one and to me, the excitement of the downward angle gives the photo more power. But what do I know?

The print can be any size/dimension as long as it's on a 11x14 board or in a matte frame of the same size. Crop is up to the maker. The print is already made and there is no apparent pixilation - it's going to be viewed from a few feet away, anyways. Not sure yet what I'll do to mount it. I don't think Walmart has a cardboard matte big enough. Perhaps I'll have a local frame shop I've worked with dry mount it like I did for a pic of he Dome of the Rock I took in 2016 when I went to Israel. Only problem is there'd no way to hang it up afterwards. I think the 11x14 pic cost like $10 or $15...don't remember. The other pics I'll probably do 8x10s so I can get standard matte frames, but I have a week and a half to decide. As for digital, when we have critiques (we used to compete for points but the same people always won) we have to downsize them to 1000 pixels on the long side for the software they use and then they are shown on a 40" HGTV - used to use a cheap projector and a movie screen. None of the images are examined with a magnifying glass, so if something's not noticeable from a normal viewing distance for the size it's not really going to matter. About the props, I spray-and-pray and try to remember to adjust the shutter speed before doing so...sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I have some really nice pics with frozen props and I have some really bad ones with the full circle blur. I have a number of pics form Oshkosh to choose from and some from another local airshow. If you have FB, check out some of my pics and make any suggestions you want.
