I'm new to photography and have a Nikon D3300. I know it's entry level. I did shoot some shots in RAW and downloaded to my laptop. After going to the folder to view the photos, I could see there was photos' in the folder. I double click it and it says empty. I know their on their somewhere. Is there something special I need to do, or do I need photo software. Any feedback appreciated.

Your title should probably be 'Downloading raw', because that is where the issue is.

How did you 'download'?
What did the software tell you as you 'downloaded'? {did it not mention a folder?}

Branson, which operating system are you using? This will help us diagnose the issue with out trying to shotgun a solution.

Your D3300 should have come with a CD with Nikon software that assists in the process of moving files from your camera to your computer when the two pieces of equipment are connected via a USB cable. You can also visit the support section and download the software directly from the Nikon site. The questions about your OS are needed to diagnose what might have happened if you copied the files directly from the SD card.

Page 201 of your D3300 manual discusses the installing and using the ViewNX 2 software.

As a very general answer, your computer photo software can't read the raw images, only jpeg. Others will know more. However, I believe the Nikon software that came with your camera can read and display a raw image. http://nikonimglib.com/nvnxi/onlinehelp/en/nk013000.html here's a link. you can also edit your images and then save the raw in jpeg which will easily be displayed on your laptop..

Download Nikon View NX-i and Capture NX-D from Nikon's website. View NX-i has a transfer function. It creates a folder for you when it transfers files. Use Capture NX-D for editing.

Thanks for all the feedback. Believe it or not I'm pretty good with a computer. Mine is windows 10. I thought about just shooting jpeg, but I want the finer detail RAW provides. I did use the software that came with the camera. And to answer 'rehess' I did save it to my pictures photo. As I mention I could see the folder showed their was a photo in it, but when open it said empty. So apparently I need photoshop or something. I will also go to the Nikon site and check out what 'CO' said. Again thanks all

You must have loaded they to something other than the photos folder.

And, while you're at it (from the same Nikon site), also download 'Nikon Transfer 2.' You'll be amazed at how those little suckers will just jump right into your computer.

Thanks for all the feedback. Believe it or not I'm... (show quote)

The Nikon software isn't needed to simply copy the files from the camera to the computer. You can insert the SD card into a slot on a Win10 computer, if it has one, and simply copy the files using Explorer. The same can be done by connecting the camera via a USB cable where W10 will recognize the camera.

Given something subtle occurred in your previous work, why don't you just simple repeat the process to a new target folder and see if you can be successful on a second try. Leaving aside whether W10 can open the RAW files and display the contents (without the Nikon software), you should be able to copy the files and see they exist on your target computer.

I politely suggest you need spelling-check on your PC. [3 mistakes]

Isn't it possible that your version of Windows 10 does not recognize Nikon's .nef files? A simple fix I am sure if you 'Google' your problem. Files do not disappear.

Win 10 should be able to see and move files even if it doesn't know how to interpret them. That is why I asked about method used to 'download' - using o/s COPY should transfer all files, assuming all were selected in the first place; putting JPEG and 'raw' in different places might result in missing one or the other, of course.

Go to the Nikon site and download the Codec for Windows. That will allow Windows to recognize the NEF files. It is a free download.
