I did an 85-day, 11750-mile auto trip in 2005 that went through a lot of the territory you plan to cover (plus a lot you won't). I can't promote it as a travelogue, but you might find some points of interest by browsing the photos I took on the trip: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/collections/72157631809934247/.

Mystic Seaport in CT. Rockport and Gloucester on the north shore, north of Boston. The mansions in Newport, RI. Acadia National Park and the seaport city of Portland in ME. If you are a history buff, take the Freedom Trail in and around Boston. Franconia Notch in NH. Manchester, VT.

Block Island, Rhode Island. only way there is by small plan or boat. Can bring your car by ferry, but have to make arrangements. You can also rent bikes and motor scooters if you wish. No supper markets or any kind of fast food chains on the island.

Adirondack mountains, New York State.

Watkins Glen, New York.

Delaware Water Gap, between NJ and PA.

Mystic Seaport, CT.

Downtown Boston (but park the car outside).

Cape Cod, Nantucket, Marthas Vinyard.

Almost all of Vermont and New Hampshire.

The list is endless. Perhaps an idea of what you'd like to photograph, e.g. "covered bridges", would help.

To continue on:
Old Sturbridge Village- a Rockefeller restoration at the intersection of I-84 (Wilbur Cross parkway) and US 20 Northeast of New Haven (on the way from Old Mystic Seaport to Boston.
Plymouth Rock and what's there to see about the Plymouth Colony
Cape Cod. Don't miss the Wood's Hole Oceanographic site and Provincetown with many scenic shops and art--and characters.
Glochester, Salem and the Massachusetts North Shore.
Lake George--ALL of it. Rodgers Rock State Park--founder of the US Army Rangers. Ft. Ticonderoga.
Colonial Williamsburg and the University of Virginia, Montecello, and George Washington's home, Mt. Vernon in Northern Virginia.
Washington DC is full of iconic buildings, memorials and statues. Pick and choose your times and be street aware!
Savannah and Charleston.

You will have a very full two months. Be prepared for heat, heat and more humidity and bugs and more bugs.

Not sure about tripod use, but there are no other restrictions.

I'll be renting a car for a 6 or 7 week leisurely photo tour through the thirteen colonies in June and July. I'm set for my kit, but would like recommendations on where to go for the best must-see sights and scenes. Thanks in advance.

I'm writing this from the perspective of someone who lived in western Massachusetts for seven years. This post was a little confusing because the term 'New England' is normally applied to the six most northeast states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Not all of these were counted amongst the 'thirteen', and the 'thirteen' included others stretching down the coast. The southern ones, like Virginia, are completely different from the northern ones, like Massachusetts - we had a little conflict over that.
