Pemaquid point lighthouse. When you go to the Portland Head Light, be sure to stop at The Cookie Jar for great coffee and great donuts! Also, understand that because of the fjord nature of the Maine coastline, you need to go down the "fingers" to really see the coastline, which is actually longer than California's. Lubec for puffins, Campobello island, all near the Canadian border

. . . . .Bar Harbor is loaded with good photo ops and good food, we never skip The Thirsty Whale, Cadillac mountain sunrise, chilly but good, Bob.

As long as there are not two or three cruise ships in port Bar Harbor is good. However add a thousand or two thousand people and it is very congested. Too bad as it will in time limit the attraction to the Bar Harbor area.

If you have low tide walk across to Bar Island, nice views from the bar and from the high point, just watch the tides

While at Portland Head Light, out on your telephoto lens and get a great shot of RAM ISLAND LIGHT, the "Ghost" Lighthouse of Portland Harbor!

I spent a couple of days in 2005 with some friends in China, Maine. We traveled around that area and I took pictures: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157631966158254/.

It is hard to find an ugly spot in Maine, really.

Portland Head Light, the Nubble Light, Acadia NP including the wilder and less crowded Schoodic section, Lubec and Quoddy Head with its great lighthouse. I echo the suggestion about Baxter State Park/Mt. Katahdin. I don't do backpacking anymore but still had a great time on shorter hikes. A puffin cruise if you're interested in those adorable birds, there are several companies along the coast.

Besides Lubec and Quoddy Head light and park bring your passport and cruise Campobello Island

Ed, you might want to skip the obvious (Acadia National Park) because it will be crawling with tourists + you live in a very pretty coastal area. If the Great North Woods sounds interesting, definitely check out Baxter State Park. You just have to be aware of moose in the roads at dusk and dawn + wear lots and lots of bug spray
Perhaps better known as the Appalachian Trail? im... (show quote)

Laughs - we are staying Bar Harbor because of Acadia..Not my first choice but this is a family group vacation with mainly easterners so...My preference for this year was a long road trip hitting all the NPS in the southwest then to Colorado , South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon and thru CA to home.. If I do it I better get a divorce before I go.. Laughs... I've been to all of these much earlier in my life or sporadically during my working career but want to do them one last time as I'm now retired and getting old enough not sure how much longer I'm up for being in a car that much.

If you all have never seen it and are planning a road trip I suggest you look at roadtrippers.com. It is a great app for creating a road trip.

Thanks for all the advice on the Maine trip. Our biggest problem is getting a good rental up there. Hopefully that is done today.

Somes Sound which nearly splits Desert Island. This is near Acadia NP

Millers Landing where MIllers Lobster Company is located. Best lobster and crab rolls in my humble opinion. Also great whole boiled lobsters. It is extremely low key and you eat on picnic tables outside. I’ve eaten there many times

Owls head lighthouse or Marshall point lighthouse although there are so many lighthouses on the Maine coast take your pick. I think they are all great

Monhegan Island is fabulous. One of our favorite places. If you go plan on a two day trip and spend the night at the inn. You can eat there at the inn too. The boat ride from Marshall point is 12 miles I think. You have to check on the schedule. There are lots of photo opportunities there as the North Atlantic pounds the east side of the island and there are trails to walk all over the island. It has heavy forests

Rockport and Camden are pretty little towns on the Atlantic. Boothbay Harbor has many older houses that are very photograpical. Great seafood, too. The Old Port area of Portland has many old buildings, great restaurants and a lot of charm.
