I have the same lens mounted on a Canon 7D. I purchased a Nest carbon fiber tripod from Harlan Carter at Carter's Camera Cottage (UHHer MT Shooter). He special ordered me one with 40 mm legs. This has the flat mounting plate you're looking for. And no wobble-inducing center column. I'm extremely satisfied with it.

You may want to check out some of Author Morris' YouTube videos on bird shooting. He shoots all the Canon big glass and a lot with Extenders too. I believe he said he switched from Gitzo to Induro tripods because of repair costs. Personally I have Really Right Stuff tripod and heads and am happy with them. I have Arca quick release plates on my gimbal and ball head for easy swapping. I also have the leveling platform. Highly recommended.

Steve, I have the Induro gimbal head and use the Induro CT313 tripod. Good combination and When I was looking into this combination,
B&H set up a three way phone conversation with Induro and that is what they recommended, at the time. The guy from Induro threw in
some goodies also and one hell of a warranty. 10 Years

Tripods with leveling bases are pretty large. They are very convenient for quick setup. I have a couple, but I rarely use them for wildlife because I'm more interested in portability. And less interested in stability because I'm shooting high shutter speeds.

I sometimes use an Acratech leveling base; it's compact with a large bubble. It's similar to their ball heads, just squatter and with less adjustment.

But really, with a little practice, you can level up a tripod pretty quickly with leg adjustments as long as it has a good bubble. Two leg adjustments and you're ready to go. Pick the leg that the bubble is closest to and shorten until the bubble lines up with another leg. Then shorten that leg until the bubble is in the center. Practice a couple of times, and it becomes automatic.

You do realize you can get a Feisol CT3442 and it's leveling base LB-7567 that weighs a hair over 3 lbs, collapses to 29", has a load capacity of 55lbs - would that be light, sturdy and portable enough for you?

I have this legset and it's bigger brother, the 4.5 lb (with leveling base) CT-3472 (not the 3471 as I stated above). I find the smaller legs fine for most applications, but when I need more stability (macro, closeup, long lenses) I carry the extra 1.5 lbs.

I don't consider either tripod too heavy or large to carry around.

What brand of Arca quick release plates are you using on your gimbal and ball head?
Thanks!

Really Right Stuff makes a plate that fits the base of the ball head. I have the largest ball, BH55 I believe. The pano gimbal from RRS uses the same plate but it might come with it today or it might be an add on. I also used the same plate with a Wimberly II gimbal in the past. They have several options actually...

I use a Wimberley gimbal with my 600mm. I highly recommend it. Once everything is balanced, the lens will remain in whatever position you have it in until you move it. (Can move it with the push of a finger.)

I just ordered a LeoFoto LN-404C - It is a big sturdy tripod similar to the almost 3 times as expensive Gitzo. It is just a little over $500 + whatever head you want to put on. Comes with both a 100mm bowl and a flat mounting plate. Everything I have been able to dig up about it is raving appraises.

Made in Sweden. Could be a serious contender to Gitzo,

I'll let you know more once I have had a chance to use it in anger

A friend took a 3 day intensive landscape class from/with Art Wolfe. One thing about tripods, he pretty much insisted that you should avoid using one with a center column, too shaky. Just one pro's recommendation - YMMV.

For critical shots, a leveling base is required, makes it quick and easy to achieve a stable and level platform. All of these will have a mounting screw that will allow you to attach a gimbal head.

Why in the world would it be necessary to level a gimbal for wildlife shots -- critical or not?
