Hello - new here and really enjoy your site. I shoot with a D800 and decided to add a new body. My D810 just arrived and my very first shot with a 200-500 zoom has moire. Close up of a bird with trees as the background. OMG - I just read about moire before I made my purchase, have I made a mistake. I shoot jpegs and RAW and use Lightroom. Thanks!

Try another lens and see what happens. I wouldn't condemn the camera without a bit of testing.

Can you post an example, upload original so we can see the EXIF data.
It may just be technique. I also hate to say it, but sometimes after reading of a problem after a big purchase, we tend to obsess about something we wouldn't have normally seen. Hard to tell without seeing an example.

Moire has as much to do with the subject as it does with the camera. In Lightroom under the adjustment brush there is a moire slider that can reduce or eliminate this condition. If this fails to work for you send me the camera and I will make good use of it.

If you would like to get rid of the D810. I've been wanting one for 2 years. I also have the D800 but would relegate it to a second position.

The D810 does not a filter, so that might be the problem.

Moire is very specific to angle, focal length, lighting (angle), subject to camera distance, texture or grid causing effect. Also monitor viewing magnification can make it come and go - zoom in or your with Ps or Lr and it will come and go. It is very specific as I said. You just happened to get it in your first shot. I have 3 "regular" Pentax DSLRs and even the two older ones with an AA filter sometimes show moire on the fabric on my sofa, yet virtually nothing else. I have to had or used my newer camera with no AA filter to see if I get it ever. Also all three cameras are different pixel count APS-C cameras, 14MP, 16MP, 24MP. So if you move around or do anything else it may not show. Just possibly something else to notice when framing a shot, unfortunately. Also had you been using a Nikon D800E you would have been used to these issues and already adjusting your shooting for it. Another solution/point, keep your D800 for conditions where you will get Moire!

I've had a D810 for about 3 1/2 years. It's an incredible camera with a lot of significant improvements over the D800. And the mirror/shutter mechanics are nothing short of phenomenal. But there's the lack-of-AA-filter problem. Aliasing artifacts are absolutely an issue with it.

So, when the D850 came out, rather than continuing to fight to avoid aliasing problems, I decided to take advantage of people dumping their D800s, and I scooped up a used one. I liked it enough, then when I ran into another good used one, I grabbed that one up as well. I realized that for me, all the cool improvements of the D810 where less important than having a properly designed sensor with AA filter. I purchased the two D800s fearing that the D800 may be the last high-resolution body Nikon will ever make with an AA filter.

I still have my D810, but I'm using the D800s almost all the time now instead. Oddly, the D800s actually seem to produce sharper, or at least better, images even though at the pixel level they're slightly softer. I guess it's like aliased text on a computer screen which looks much better than text characters that haven't been aliased.

So, was it a mistake on your part? Only you can decide. The D810 is a fantastic camera, but you'll have to live with the aliasing design flaw.

The mistake you made was not buying an 850.

Happy to report, I removed the plastic from the veiwer on the camera. Don't laugh. I just want things to be easy and build a great system as I shoot all the time and love it. I will be watching the daily inspirations as I have for the past week and have gained so much thought to tweek my processes.

You could be right but I am so happy with my D800. I read the 850 would need LR changes. I take it slow, the changes. Thanks!! Enjoy your 850.
