My son wants to buy a Nikon P-900 for our summer trip to Ireland and Scotland. The big zoom is the thing he likes about it. The question is...does anyone know if there iis a new model in the works. If so, when? Or, if there is another camera you would recommend for this trip. Thanks....
Canon SX60, a little less in price and it has RAW option...just a little shorter in zoom.
Thank you all for your great responses and advice. My son is 35. He owns a Nikon D7000, so understands about cameras. His friend has a D900 so he has used it, briefly. I got a Cannon G5 for my trip to Israel two years ago. For him, the zoom is more important than having small sized camera. From your replies, sounds like this will be the camera for him. I think he will wait until summer to get it...just in case...a newer model comes out. Then, he can evaluate if newer features are worth the price or buy this one and save a bit. Again....thank you for taking the time to respond. :)
Thank you! How many batteries would you suggest he take with him? How long does it take to recharge a battery. (I purchased two chargers and four batteries for my Cannon G5 and was glad I did on my Israel trip)

Gonna use a tripod?
Yes. He plans to get a tripod when we get there to use while we are traveling. He will also carry a small one with him.

There are many newer models of speed light than the P900. That flash was taken off the market due to overheating with numerous flashes. I have one though and love it. I have watched a Youtube video of a 900 which did over heat but only after a number of flashes that I would never use. It was not a good flash for say, a wedding photographer but for me who uses it for macro shooting it is excellent. It was also inexpensive bought used.

Too bad a flash like the SB-900 can't be used on the P900 camera.

The P900 is definitely hard on batteries since the zoom is motor driven. I carry two extra batteries when we travel and a car charger (if appropriate, but rarely used). I usually charge batteries over night so have no sense of charge time.

I've had my P900 for a little over a year. It's an incredible versatile camera that entirely eliminates the need to carry extra lenses. No one knows if or when there will be a replacement. Rumors have swirled for years that a new model will be out in "a couple months" so take all rumors witl a large grain of salt.

P900 is a bridge camera not a flash, the flash is an SB-900.
Yes, thank you. I have already been notified of my faux pas and have apologized to all concerned.

Very true. It is a great flash. I suspect it will be bigger than the camera times 2 though.

I have the P900 and the Canon SX60. Both megazooms. The SX60 has a 65x zoom vs the 83x zoom on the Nikon. The canon has a 24mm wide angle vs 24 MM on the NIKON. The canon does RAW. The Canon is smaller and lighter. I prefer the Canon and use is as a secondary camera when I travel, I use it for times I need a large zoom and to take videos.(1080P) The Canon is cheaper than Nikon and is heavily discounted on line.

I borrowed and used the P900 for about a week. Its image quality is good up to about 500-600mm, beyond that not the greatest. With this in mind I can think of lots of camera with a 24-600mm zoom and 1" sensors (instead of the P900's 1/2.3" sensor) that will give much better results.
But if you really want a 2000mm zoom in a small camera, there aren't too many out there...

My wife has the P-900 and absolutely loves it.
She can't seem to get enough of it, and grab's it whenever the birds are around our feeders.
I however just bought the Sony RX-10 IV and am going thru the instructions now.
This camera has the ability to excel beyond my Sony a99 II in so many ways.
We are both going to Alaska the end of May and we will be taking both cameras along with us.
We wish you luck.

You will love the RX10 IV. I have both the III & IV; both great cameras!

I love mine...have had it more than a year. I don't know how old your son is but if he is reading about the Coolpic P900 I would say "Go for it!" Go for the P900...not that much more expensive and the zoom is top notch. I also love it because of the macro.
enjoy! Oh, buy a supplemental charger and extra battery/ies. The battery lasts along time, but if you are on a trip, you want to have a charged battery to switch instead of plugging the camera in to charge.
