Cotton-top tamarins have very acute sensory perception. They have excellent smelling abilities, and they use this sense primarily for navigating the forest and for finding ripe food items. They also use scent to identify individuals and receptive females. Tamarins have sharp vision and use it while foraging for food and while navigating their arboreal environment as they swing from branch to branch.

The appearance of White-cheeked Gibbons varies by age and with sex. All infants are a beige color. Around a year to 1.5-years old, their coats have become black with white cheek patches. At sexual maturity (five to seven years), males remain black and females turn back to a beige color.

The Hamill Family Play Zoo encourages children and their families to take an active role in learning by touching animals, planting and tending a garden, examining animal X-rays, releasing ladybugs in the summertime, pretending to be a zoo director or animal keeper, engaging in mud finger painting, painting their faces, and building habitats as they imagine what it is like to be an animal.

A Colobus monkey's diet consists of 80% leaves and about 15% fruit. Why only 15% fruit? Because in the forest, where colobus monkeys live, fruit is seasonal. So when fruit is not in season, these monkeys eat a lot of leaves to meet their dietary needs.

Contrary to cartoon portrayals and common misconceptions, pelicans never carry food in their bill pouches. They use them to scoop up food but swallow their catch before flying off.

Orangutans have exhibited lots of similarities to human growth and behaviors. They tend to shelter themselves from the rain or the sun with large leafy branches or large leaves. They also engage in tool use in the wild. As for development, the first year is very similar to human infant development.

Excellent images. You seem to do a fine job of getting shots that don't make the animals look like they're confined.

Paul, This had got to be one of your best set of images I've seen. You captured the majesty of this beautiful gorilla and the sadness of the Orangutan (don't know if he's really sad or not). These images are stunningly beautiful. I also have to complement you on the image of the American Pelicans. This is one of my favorite birds to watch in the wild. They are such elegant fliers, especially when they skim just inches above the water and waves. We currently have a resident pelican on our pier that has acclimated to people. It'll walk around the pier with all the humans and sometimes stand face-to-face with you just inches away.

I also got a chuckle from your image of Nora. I thought it was a human finger until I looked closer.

Very nice captures one of your best sets.

Mike
