Now I got the mixed up days straight. Here are the Thursday 3-22 experiments.
These I tried at f/3.5 , not enough DOF. All three 5DIV, Canon Macro EF 100 mm f/2.8 USM, 1/100 @ f/3.5
#1 I went for dark gloomy lighting and cool colors ISO 125 11 frames I had the HB Tube set for 10 but shoot 11 by mistake and just used them all.
#2 Here the picture is bright, cheery and warm ISO 400 25 frames I had the HB Tube set for 30 but 5 the whole subject was out of focus so I dropped them.
#3 Sort of in the middle but tilted to dark and cool ISO 160 29 frames Again set for 30 but one totally out of focus.
11 stack - dark, gloomy and cool colors

25 stack - bright, cheery and warm

29 stack - in the middle but tilted to dark and cool

I wonder; does one really need to take that many shots for a decent stacking?

It depends on the DOF of each shot, esp since they need to over lap about 30% just like pano shots to ensure a good meld. One day I will get there.
And, with macro the DOF is often measured in just a couple of mm.
I figured it is easier to learn it on larger subjects further away instead of critical macro distances and DOF.

Thanks. I was just wondering. Makes sense.
Your Helicon FB Experiments are coming along nicely.
Good work.
I love the lighting. The 2nd one is my favorite.
Interesting ... practice makes perfect .. 2nd one has my vote as well ....

Thanks, yes in #2 the brighter lighting and colors make the details stand out more.

I plan to practice a lot over the nest week or so. Until I get sick of focus stacking and take a break to do something else again, like my birds.
And #2 is leading in the polls.
