I can't understand why people shoot RAW + Jpeg when the RAW file contains a embedded Jpeg and can be easily separated using the EXCELLENT free Program Instant Jpeg from RAW. Down load from.

I shoot both raw and jpeg so I can transfer the jpegs to my wife's i-phone via wi-fi for her to text to various and sundry. We do this a lot on the trips we take. And as has already been pointed out, one I down load them to my computer I can get a fast preview of what i've got and can also preview them to clients using windows photo viewer.

I messed up. Only downloaded the sd card with jpeg images then reformatted both cards. Can you stack star images if you only have the jpegs? thanks

Were you actually shooting RAW+JPEG with the instructions to use each card separately for each format? Or were you shooting using both cards with the same command and thus creating a RAW + JPEG side-by-side. If you were shooting RAW+JPEG side-by-side and imported the cards into LR without turning on a specific command to show both formats it would look like you only had one image loaded. This is something to know if you do shoot both formats and use LR.

Perhaps other cameras do it differently, but on mine, both are Sony's, the embedded JPG is much more compressed than the one I get with JPG+RAW. That said, I don't use that option because I can get better JPGs later, on the computer via a few good applications.

To answer YOUR question ☺ I believe you CAN stack jpegs, but I haven't. Try it, you'll probably find out sooner than what is happening here.

I found that FastRawViewer was a better way to solve that problem. YMMV. It's very fast and shows you the actual raw (in useable form) so you can judge exposure and contrast accurately. JPG's are NOT the best way to do that.

FRV allows you to send an image directly to an external editor and/or to send it to a different directory (folder). The instructions are for "culling" but I use it just the opposite. My "rejects" are the ones I want to post-process. There are, for me, many fewer worth any effort than the total taken.

I didn't know I had to download them separately. Live and learn.

If one is using LR, you have the choice of both at once(my preferred option) or each separately.

I’m assuming you had only jpeg on one card and only RAW on the other?

What version of Elements are you using? On 15 a thumbnail shows my RAW images in Organizer.

thank you for the information, and I will try to recover the raw files. However, back to the original question, can you use jpeg images to stack and create star trails. I shot 2 hours of 30 sec exposure with 2 sec intervals and 2 hours of 4 min exposures with 2 sec intervals. Just wondering if all is lost or not.

Starstax software allows you to use jpegs to create star trail photos.

The other take-home lesson here is to delete file / reformat the card only after confirming that all files have indeed been moved.
