I messed up. Only downloaded the sd card with jpeg images then reformatted both cards. Can you stack star images if you only have the jpegs? thanks

Don't do anything with the raw card yet. Reformatting just marks the file location table as available. There are many programs that can recover data from a reformatted card. As long as you don't write anything new to it.

If you ONLY formatted and did not write onto the card (take pictures over it) you are in Luck. Download RECUVA (find web site) and let it do its magic. The web site will explain what it can do.

Never shoot raw + jpeg again. Hope you have luck recovering your files.

I'm curious why you would d/l only JPG and not the RAW. Curious, not judging.

Try any recovery program. It should be able to recover most files on your card, however, in the formating, some may be partially corrupt or written over. BUT, you should get most if not all. I mention this to prepare you in case you don't recover them all.

Recuva is just one program. I used it a few years ago when I had a similar problem and managed to get most recovered. Out of several hundred files maybe three or four only had part of the file intact. I deleted everything on the card even though I didn't d/l one batch.

thank you for the information, and I will try to recover the raw files. However, back to the original question, can you use jpeg images to stack and create star trails. I shot 2 hours of 30 sec exposure with 2 sec intervals and 2 hours of 4 min exposures with 2 sec intervals. Just wondering if all is lost or not.

I can't understand why people shoot RAW + Jpeg when the RAW file contains a embedded Jpeg and can be easily separated using the EXCELLENT free Program Instant Jpeg from RAW. Down load from.

I use RAW and JPEG because JPEG loads faster for quick review. It also gives me a benchmark against which to judge my RAW result. Finally, Elements does not give me a thumbnail of RAW images.

For my D500 that has dual card, for backup. One card goes bad, I have the other.
For bluetooth transmission to smart phone or tablet, the jpeg is the one that gets sent -the raw does not.
I once shot an event and had to convert my raw files using the adobe dng converter. For some reason they were filled with awful noise. The jpeg files saved me.
