I was very lucky to find this beautiful woodpecker today. The Pileated is the largest woodpecker in North America, and she stayed long enough for me to get a few shots
Good ones.. Those lil fellows are really quick...

Thanks don, got these at Freedom Park, over on the wet side. She was a good distance but I was lucky

Thanks tk, it was fun to see, with a wing span of 30" and the bright colors she was hard to miss
Wow! You got a lot of shots of the bird. These guys never stay still for long. Good job capturing the flighty male.

Thanks Larry, first time one stayed more then one second.
Great captures! I also find them nearly impossible to see for more than a brief nano second, much less be able to take a photo!

Had one of these right outside our guest bedroom in Michigan last summer..scared the crap out of our dog...great shots!
How lucky you are to see such a bird, and well done on the captures. Over here we only get three species of Woodpecker, the Greater Spotted (pictured), Green Woodpecker and the Lesser Spotted, the latter being as rare as Rocking Horse poo.
Greater Spotted Woodpecker

Thanks molly, they are usually a good distance off and then they are gone. This one was not to far but up under the palms, I couldn't believe I was able to get off a few shots. These are from three trees about 5' apart.

Thanks rlaugh, I can understand how the could scare the dog, they are quite large and very vocal.
