Problem viewing photos from new SD card

I recently bought a new SD card online and I'm unable to view the file in LR or PS or any other program. It says "Preview unavailable for this file".
Thank you for your thoughts!

If you can attach it to a PC, download the file "Recuva" and let it search for files. If it's recoverable, this will find it. Recuva is free.

Can you view the files on your camera? Were you shooting RAW and do your programs recognize those RAW files? Not all programs recognize all RAW files. With Windows computers you can right click on card and bring up it's properties. That will tell you what and how many files are actually on the card.

I'm assuming you can view them in the camera, but not on the PC? You may want to download (free) Faststone Viewer. (http://faststone.org/FSViewerDownload.htm) You may also use Windows Photo or similar on Apple to view them. See if they can be viewed in FastStone and/or Photo. If so, then the issue is with Photoshop or LR. One other possibility to check - make sure you have not inadvertently slipped the tiny switch on the side of the SD card. It should be in the up position.

Assuming you formated the card in the camera, let's look elsewhere.

One big problem is fraudulent SD cards. They will take a low capacity / slow card and paste a high capacity / high speed label on it. Also, they will fabricate their own sub-standard card and paste a counterfeit label on it. That is why it is always recommended to buy your SD cards from reputable dealers. That includes brick and mortar Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and the like. Ralph's Discount Electronics is not a good place to look. The same applies on-line. Adorama, B&H, Roberts, Samy's and other reputable outlets buy from the manufacture. Amazon, New Egg, and Walmart on-line stores too often use third party sellers.

Check the contacts on the card are there and not loose. A full size SD card has 9 contacts and a micro has 8. If you have a micro SD card check the contacts on the card as well as the full size adapter.

Check your USB cable. Try the camera with a known good card to see if it works.

And lastly, make sure you formatted the card in the camera.

Yup!! Have had it happen and you are right, at least in my case.

I'll bet the card is not the issue!

check the little read/write protect switch on the side of the SD card. If in the protect position you will not be able to read from the card.
try it with the switch in both positions.

The switch is a write protect, not a read protect. It disables writing to the card, not reading from it.

As others mentioned, the card may not be performing to a high enough spec, but the files may be fine. Try downloading them to your computer first. then try to open in LR from that location.

What files ARE on the card? Name and extension?
More information is needed.
"Doesn't work." just makes people grasp at straws for a solution.

He didn't say it doesn't work, but specifically ""Preview unavailable for this file". This message is what a couple have experienced and it was the inability to read RAW files. He might clue us in on the specifics of file type.

Yup. What he wants to do doesn't work.
Could even be the camera set to only RAW and whatever he is using to look at them cannot handle that RAW type.
Could be he didn't format the card in the camera? (I've never tried not formatting in the camera to see what happens.)

It's tough when the OP is unable to provide additional feedback and the conjecture increases. Hopefully we'll get more info soon. For me, the message he got is likely the answer that points to software unable to read and not a disk problem. lol! We'll see!
