Exceptional shots, Katy. What method did you use to catch them unaware?

Katydid, your first four are great shots, but the last one is easily the winner. A bird in it's true environment showing just how hard it can be sometimes to find and see one. That is the kind I hope to shoot.

Thanks for looking, wdross. I love the last one, not just because it is hiding in its natural environment but because it makes me smile.

Well done. You were lucky to catch one out in the open. They have a habit of hiding in clumps of long grass and then flying up in your face as you are just about to step on them. Scares the beejaysus out of you.

Phil, most of my photography of birds is done in refuges from the car. I find walking around scares everything off.

As a kid, I used to hunt them, and was fairly good at it. Since I gave up hunting at the age of 20 and took up nature photography - eons ago - I have rarely seen any and have never gotten a good photo. Excellent shots of a beautiful bird!

D2b2, good for you for realizing that shooting photographs was better than killing these amazing birds and at such an early age you figured it out! Thanks for your comments.

Very nice photos of the pheasants! They are an extremely beautiful bird and under appreciated. I grew up in north Iowa and pheasants were everywhere. Like Longshadow mentioned (I live close to him) I have not seen pheasants for years in SE Pennsylvania. Too populated with us humans now. Even when I go a couple counties north into the farm country to shoot photos I don't see them.

Thanks for posting.

Thank you, Goober. It is very sad that most people never even see a live pheasant.

Good Morning, beautiful capture. What camera and settings did you use. Stunning photos.

Michelle, thanks for your comments. Three different settings as taken at different times. It is actually the great Nikon 200-500 lens that I blame for getting good captures. Taken from the car.

Dennis, we drove up in the car on an autotour, very slowly. It was on a berm and we let it come in our direction so it never knew we were parked there. Only way I know to get photos of them. The minute you open the caar door they are gone.

Thanks all of you for your comments. If I didn't address you individually, it doesn't mean I didn't read every comment and appreciate each one. I do!

Very nicely done, Katy. Good composition, exposure, and processing.

They are the most skittish birds (and who can blame them), always darting into the reeds. You have to catch them when they are unaware of your presence.
