I would like to experiment with time lapse photography. What gear should I purchase? Intervalometer? Slider? etc.

If you're just beginning with timelapse, I highly recommend you visit learntimelapse.com, and perhaps invest twenty bucks in Ryan Chylinski's book on the subject; it covers just about everything including a chapter devoted strictly to the gear. It helped me a whole lot.

An intervalometer is an absolute. If your camera does not have an organic timelapse capability, I suggest a Vello Shutterboss II for $49, assuming it can connect to your camera, which would be nice if we knew which one you have. A more advanced solution would be the Syrp Genie Mini, a timelapse and panorama rotating platform. A mega step up would be a Syrp Genie and a Syrp slider platform, bit that is a long way off.

Get the Intervalometer and practice.

You need software to merge timelapse images into a final product, unless you have a something like a Nikon D810 or D850. Look at Lightroom Timelapse, an incredible LR plugin. Warning, it ain't easy to do a timelapse.

DSLR Dashboard, an Android, Windows, IOS app, has a built-in intervalometer, which you can control from your smartphone, either tethered or wireless. Using a Nikon you get two modes, one that records it as a video, and the other that records individual frames that you can merge into a video with Lightroom with a plugin or with Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, or Final Cut Pro. There are other apps that can do that as well.

Thank you for your replies
I will make good use of your suggestions
It is a testimony to my innocence regarding time lapse images that I did not mention using a T6i
