Reminds me of when I got home from work and found my television set and both my dogs sitting in the driveway.... I kinda knew something was wrong!

Turned out that the thieves were a crew of 8 or more who were hitting two houses at the same time. The other house down the street was next door to a cop, who was at home, heard glass breaking and confronted the guys who broke in there. They took off and alerted the others, apparently, who left my home quickly on foot with only a few things they could fit in pockets (incl. a nice Olympus camera!)

The off-duty cop followed them to a nearby apartment building and phoned it in.... But no one was ever caught and nothing ever recovered, go figure!

It depends on what you mean by a political point. Clearly statistics can be used either way, but please don't try to tell me what my opinions or motivations are. The evidence is overwhelming that gun owners are at greater risk than non gun owners. How one uses that information is the political side. The point that I wish to emphasize here is not a political one, but one of common sense. By posting to the world that that he is going to be away for several days and including the information that reveals the home address is less than wise.

Regardless of any political considerations, would you disagree with that point?

I think the chances of the OP attracting criminals due to this thread is slim. May I assume, that you don’t bank? Or live in a neighborhood? Don’t ever leave your home that is many miles away from the closest town? Don’t use a credit card? Make phone calls? Use the Internet for surfing? Just to name a few instances that can get you in trouble. But your point is well taken.

Lying with statistics is so common that a book was published: Lying with statistics by Darrel Huff.

I don't believe in any statistics except, possibly, from people who don't have an ax to grind on that particular subject. Even people who don't have an ax to grind often make mistakes. (Having taught mathematical statistics in my misspent youth, I know that there are more than a few pitfalls.)

Particularly in the gun debate, both sides cook their statistics so that the statistics "support" their point. You can "prove" anything by cooking your statistics or your data.

I get the same grief over giving my address here but the house is internationally known with the address. There are tours through it and in the papers.
Yes we have a security system so if it goes off while we are home the police will be in time to collect the dead intruder and we never advertise going on a trip ever until we are back.

Good idea, I will have to try that. Balance may be an issue along with possible scratches and scuffs when it all falls apart. But, what the check, you only live once right.

Thomas, I do all of those things, and I'm pretty easy to track down, but I do try not to advertise when I'm away from home, and I try not to post images that are clearly taken from my home with GPS coordinates. I don't keep a GPS in my/our vehicles, at least not visibly, but just in case the home location is programmed to be the local police station.

Even if the chances are small they still exist, and the last thing anybody wants is an intrusion by the bad guys. It happened to me without any assistance from the internet, just visibly packing bags into a vehicle. We don't do that anymore, but having your house ransacked is a painful experience. We watch over our neighbors, and they watch over us, but these things can happen very fast.

That said, thank you for appreciating my point, there is no reason to help the bad guys through lack of awareness. As Scott McNealy - CEO and founder of Sun Microsystems said, "You have no privacy, get over it!"

So many people have no idea of what they are sharing publicly on the internet that they wouldn't write on a sign board and post outside their house. From what I understand of your personal background you have good reason for not trusting the people that would look at anyone's information, being either state sponsored organizations or criminals.

As someone who's degree says statistics on it, I hear what you are saying, and I definitely know how to lie with statistics, but it also 'takes a thief to catch a thief'. However, that being said, we should consider statistical studies and other evidence, especially if the data is available and not cast in politically oriented conclusions. Some statistical studies are seriously flawed, and some are very insightful.

Now, I'm not trying to turn this into a debate about gun ownership, I really don't want to go down that path, I have my opinions, but they are not relevant to a discussion about whether it is wise to publish your home location (intentionally or otherwise) and the fact that you are leaving for several days.

Can we stay on the topic please, and especially the danger that the OP may have unknowingly exposed himself to. UHH may be a relatively low risk site, but the same image posted somewhere else could be a very different kettle of fish.
