Ha! And if something does you will be the #1 suspect.

To whom are you addressing that comment? Please use <quote reply> when responding.

If addressed to me, I wouldn't be the number one suspect. Law enforcement professionals are much smarter than that, and you may note that I didn't actually post the address, just alerted the OP to the risks. Plus I have nothing to hide from LE, so it wouldn't be an issue even if they knocked on my door and asked questions.

That said it is important for people to understand what information they reveal when 'playing' on the internet. The vast majority have no idea.

I dont want anyone to know that these are my cameras, I also do not want anyone to know my real first name is Erik and I live in Akron, Ohio.

I have a viscious guard dog...

After 30 years of Nikon

I learned that everyone ends up with what they deserve

Peter - I was not aware of the GPS info that is recorded on some photos - yes that makes a big difference - I am sure my camera gear is not spreading my address info.
Oh - over the past 2 weeks I have added another $29.99 worth of gear to my T3i kit.

Hi Harvey, Yes your cameras do not have GPS, so there is no danger that such information could be in the EXIF data. I did check, just to be sure, and had I found it I would have PM'd you. That said, if I wanted to spend the time I probably could find your address, it really isn't that hard to do.

My purpose here is simply to alert people that they may be much more vulnerable than they realize. It's very easy to track me down through public information sources.

Anyhow, take good care Harvey, always good to hear from you.

I take your comment about not a good choice, but just remember that armed home invasions happen, and also that gun owners are more likely to be hurt or killed than non gun owners. The statistics on that are solid. Some criminals are more than willing to shoot first, and if they've done this kind of thing before, then they probably know how and when to strike. Why give them any help?

This argument has gone down a rabbit hole with people quoting statistics without regard to whether they exist or whether they were created to support a particular agenda. Figures don't lie but liars figure.

We don't want to take this off topic, so let's come back out of the rabbit hole. Statistics can clearly be misused, but the evidence is there that gun owners are at higher risk than non gun owners. I'm not trying to make a political point with that. The problem here is the sharing of information on line. Regardless of the situation, why increase the risk by telling the world that you will be away for several days and revealing your address?

I never did the statistics but apparently, it seems to me that there is more discussion, on this an many other online photographic forums, pertaining to equipment in and of itself, as opposed any other subject so it is not illogical or surprising that folks want to compare gear, see what each others use, talk about acquisitions, prices, dealers and everything in the realm of hardware. This is probably a carry over from the photographic press, the photo magazines, which in many cases, lately, have become nothing more than gear catalogs, adverting media for the equipment manufacturers and retailers and editorials about equipment. I still have some vintage copies of photo magazines from the 1940s through the 1960s and there was far more in-depth articles about technique, DYI equipment improvisations, builds and projects, insights into how successful photographers work and totally honest reviews of equipment quality.

Personally, I don't find any logic or benefit to anyone on the forum if I were to publish a list or photograph of my entire equipment inventory or even boasted about it. The only time I have made such images and lists are for insurance documentation purposes. I have included images of some of my gear in my posts to show a particular configuration, setup, or camera or lighting array that would illustrate an answer to someone's question and be of benefit or technical help to others. Except for custom made gear or adaptations, very exotic stuff or interesting collectors items, we all know what the regular stuff looks like.

There is nothing wrong with discussing equipment, especially if it relates to a a certain technique or usage or helping folks in making a purchasing decision.

As far as crime and security are concerned, it is advisable to take certain precautions and safeguards. All I can point out is that many of my wedding clients have refrained from placing engagement announcement , specifying wedding dates in the society pages of local newspapers because there was a rash of burglaries when the bad guys found out that their homes would be unguarded and vulnerable to burglary. Funeral homes have not been publishing dates and times of services in obituaries for the same reason- how low is that!? House “babysitting” has become an industry. There have been bands of organized thieves that target weddings and events for the theft of musical instruments, audio-visual, disk jockey and PHOTOGRAPHIC equipment form vehicles and venues. The internet is a festering place for all kinds of crime, fraud and worse. The bad folks use it just as much as we do to enhance THEIR activities. So friends, as the say in the legal profession “govern yourselves accordingly”! Make sure you valuable gear is insured and well secured and proceed on the Internet with logic, caution and common sense.

Behavior? I am resigned to the fact that once folks become adults and haven't embraced good manners, decorum, polite behavior and kindness toward others, it's too late. Good clean and even vigorous debate should stimulate conversations, foster teaching and learning but not “incite” folks to “riot”. Verbal abuse is not a illegitimate mechanism for passionate argument. Oftentimes the anonymity of the Internet enables rude folks to do their thing without detection or reprisal. The trolls and boors , unfortunately and sadly, come with the territory. I am not a psychologist and even if I were, I would not venture to “diagnose” anyone over the Internet. My only frustration is that when sincere folks post an honest and logical question, request or statement, and there are always helpful normal responses, eventually however, in too many instances, the trolls get in the mix and the bickering, name-calling and outright stupidity overtakes the thread. At theses junctures, it I up to me, if I want to continue participating on the forum at all or just pack it in to avoid the silliness and frustration.

What keeps me going is my sense of humor. If one does not posses a sens of humor, perhaps a quirky, morbid or sick one, it can be hard to navigate the Internet and remain calm and mentally healthy. So...I may decide to publish a shot of some of the gear in my studio- the stuff that is too heavy to run away with, bolted down the the ceiling, floor and walls or too “old school” to interest any savvy burgler. One of my camera stands weigh in at over 130 lbs. so anyone trying to make off with it would probably brake his neck carrying it down the stairs or at least sustain a nasty hernia. If anyone tampered with my ceiling mounted rail/track lighting rigs, they would probably take the ceiling down and kill or seriously injure themselves. I would just hope I would not be held responsible for their fate.
I think I am indemnified against bad guys injuring themselves on my premises but here in Canada, there is a law against "setting a man trap". Now there's something to ponder!

Of course you’re trying to make a political point and that’s ok. Just don’t deny it.

I have to laugh at this - but in truth these "ankle biters" make a lot of noise and are good watch dogs - the only time my home was robbed was in a condo complex near a park east of SF a few miles - the crooks went right to my fridge and got food to give my German Shepard and then helped themselves.
When we moved into a tract area we got some good advise - buy and mount a dummy CCTV camera and post a sign "Warning 24 hr Surveillance in use. 13 yrs and no break-ins like some neighbors had.

Some people enjoy comparing gear and appreciate it just for it's own sake or competitively (my LENS is bigger than YOURS!)

Others, it's the end results that really matter.

Some of us are collectors (aka, "hoarders"! )

Oldies...

Rare...

Silly...

Old school...

Lots of lovely old glass...

"Poor man's Leica"...

20 years, "a million miles" and counting...

Favorite compact rangefinder...

I could go on... but you get the idea!
