It really disappoints me that some people in UHH find it necessary to be so snarky and rude. There are obviously quite a few people enjoying this site who are enthusiastic about photography and the equipment that goes along with it. If one is concerned about safety, a polite reference to that would suffice. However, I personally don't see how it makes much difference whether you show your gear or not since, if you post a picture and explain what gear and lens you use, you are "giving away" the same information. If criminals were frequently "lurking" on UHH to locate targets, I think we might have heard about some of it. Besides the criminals would have to go all around the world to catch some of the gear. There is so much good information and solid recommendations (generally and nicely phrased as recommendations rather than hard and fast rules) that it seems we gain absolutely nothing by being rude except drawing attention to the rudeness.

I'm not going to resort to any kind of name calling, but Jim Bob has a very valid point. Today is March 10th. In your post (dated March 9th you said, "Wife and I leave tomorrow for Grand Island, Nebraska for the Sandhill Cranes, Ducks and Geese and Eagles...."

Now I assume that you will be taking some or all of your camera gear, but you have clearly told the world that you will be away from home. Whether your home will be unoccupied or not we cannot know, but it is certainly a flag to any predators that have read this post. We now know that you will be gone for several days. Since your iPhone image had the GPS location in the EXIF data it took me less than a minute to identify your address. It is that easy. Even if there is someone in your house, some one could easily watch for signs of absence, and a skilled house breaker could be in and out in twenty minutes or so. Some might not even care whether there is anyone inside or not.

Showing your camera pics isn't a bad idea, but including information that indicates that you will be away for several days and identifies your address does create risk to your property and possibly any other people in that property while you are away.

That said, I hope that you have a great trip, and that nothing bad happens.

ROTFLMAO I have been on internet groups for over 20 yrs and this is the most paranoid statement I have ever read - I am having a hard time understanding how anyone could track down where someone lives/their home address from an internet post.

PH SIB is just showing the variety of gear he has and uses. We are all proud of the equipment we worked hard to acquire. It shows our tastes in equipment, the type of photos we make, and invites others to ask how this lens or that accessory works and if it is worth it. I personally like knowing what others have and use, and why. Members are always asking for advice on equipment they own. Isn't that one of the reasons that this forum exists?

Every time we go out to make some images, we "advertise" our gear. If I was too afraid of someone stealing my equipment, I would never go out shooting. How about driving my car? Wearing a nice watch?

How about selling here on UHH? Other venues? We cannot walk around scared all the time, else we would be paralyzed, and do nothing. I have been through enough nasty stuff in my life that I refuse to be afraid to live it.

That is a very fair point, but telling the world that you will be away from home for several days and revealing your house address in the EXIF data of the photo is somewhat risky behavior. Even if there are people in the house, home invasions happen, some times by armed criminals, so even having armed residents in the property still exposes property and residents to unnecessary risk.

I try to not use the GPS function nor to broadcast my trips-and the neighbor watches the home-although he is gone in Africa hunting Leopards this week-owns many guns! Not a good choice for burglars.

Hi Harvey. That's the problem here. It took me less than a minute to identify the OP's home address. I didn't bother, but in a couple more minutes and I would have the names of all the residents. It took me only another minute to identify the property value. If I wanted to be a criminal predator I would have all I needed to know to target the property in less than ten minutes tops.

May I kindly suggest that you get up off the floor, and try to become a little more aware of the dangers of posting online. We could certainly ask the OP, but I wonder how aware he was that he had revealed his property address so easily in a single photograph.

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean that they're not out to get you!

I take your comment about not a good choice, but just remember that armed home invasions happen, and also that gun owners are more likely to be hurt or killed than non gun owners. The statistics on that are solid. Some criminals are more than willing to shoot first, and if they've done this kind of thing before, then they probably know how and when to strike. Why give them any help?

Peter - I was not aware of the GPS info that is recorded on some photos - yes that makes a big difference - I am sure my camera gear is not spreading my address info.
Oh - over the past 2 weeks I have added another $29.99 worth of gear to my T3i kit.
