I have always found attaching or detaching mounting plates to the camera to be a pain, especially in the field. I never have a coin in my pocket, or a screwdriver handy, but I have come up with a simple idea that works well. I went to the hardware store and bought several 1.25" fender washers and a few small carabiners. The fender washers are larger than a quarter and easier to use, come with a hole in the center and slide easily on the carabiner, which I clip to my camera bag where I can easily reach it. I put one on each of the bags I use the most.
I have always found attaching or detaching mountin... (show quote)

For years I have fought this issue. With Bogen and Manfrotto wanting to be different...what a pain in the butt! So I have changed all of my Manfrotto Ball Head, Fluid Video, and Glidecam heads to ARCA Swiss for quick release and mounting. I picked up a 120mm ARCA clamp for 9$ new on Ebay and placed it on my DJI Ronin adjustment plate. It serves as an extra fine tune in and out adjustment and I never have to remove the plate on my camera; ditto for the Glidecam and the Video Fluid head.

Check out the little ball head I picked up for $24 and the ARCA mounts for my video monitor. Sunway clamps are expensive, and I recently purchased a few clamps for $12.00 a set new on Ebay. For my Quantum Speedlights I have clamps on all of my stands, and plates on all of my lights. On and off without winding the cords around the stands trying to screw on the top heavy lights.

For a few bucks, problems solved all the way around without tools and frustration. When you need that allen wrench and you left it out of your bag on the kitchen table? Damn!!

Only problem I have with my Manfrotto is I have to take the plate off to put the camera on it's photo-strobe frame. Which works fine but then to use it without the frame means changing it again when I use both cameras in the field for sports shots. Different lens on each one keeps baseball field dust out of the camera body. Only way around I found so far is to mount the flash without the bracket which defeats my reason to use of the bracket.

I bought a Manfrotto style receiver and mounted it on my flash frame and it makes installing it even easier. It also comes with a spare plate.

A short grind on a grinder and round edge of the washer has a flat spot to add purchase in turning the screw.

Grind a little on the washer and you have a flat spot to add more purchase on turning the screw.

One of the advantages of an Arca Swiss system (I use and recommend RRS) is changing is not needed. Best of luck!

Yes and now RRS has redesigned their L-Plates so there is a place to carry the Allen Wrench on the bottom. A long awaited redesign.

Or you could simply by enough QR plates for all your gear and never have to worry about changing plates and losing the shot you missed while doing so.

I have Arca-Swiss heads on all my tripods/monopod. . . All my cameras and some other things (scopes, flash, etc.) have the arca swiss plates on them.

My Really Right Stuff camera plates have the Allen wrench stored in the plate...I just leave the plates on though...but the Allen wrench is there if I need it for any reason or for a lens plate.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Yes, that and the QR hole for the military grade QR which I use with my BlackRapid straps... I use the 1Dx Mk II base plate on my 1D MkIII for those two reasons too...
