African lions prey on large hoofed animals, such as gazelles, impalas, zebras and wildebeest. They will also scavenge and eat smaller prey, if necessary. Hunting often occurs in groups. The males’ manes and larger size make them more conspicuous, so females do the majority of the hunting. Hunting typically takes place at night and in early morning. Prides can spend up to 20 hours per day sleeping.

A large goat antelope, the Sichuan Takin can reach four feet in height and weighs in at an average of 600 pounds. Both males and females have thick, curled horns that extend back above the head. The species' thick blonde coat is thought to have inspired the legend of Jason and the Golden Fleece.

Chimpanzees are omnivorous, feeding regularly on fruits, stems, insects, small animals and other food items they can find in their habitats. Chimpanzees will also hunt larger prey, such as pigs, baboons and other primates. They have famously been observed using tools in the wild to gather food, most commonly thin sticks that are used to “fish” termites from their mounds.

An intricately patterned bird, the Sunbittern has a blue-grey head with white strips above and below the eye. The bird's back features alternating black, white, blue and brown stripes, which help the bird blend into the forest habitats where it lives. The sunbittern can spread its wings to display large red, yellow and black spots, which can scare away predators, who mistake the markings for eyes.

The Alpine goat is a medium to large sized breed of domestic goat known for its very good milking ability. They have no set colours or markings. Alpine goats are friendly and highly curious, however they can be independent and strong-willed. The breed originated in the French Alps. Mature does weigh around 135 lbs, and are about 30 in tall at the shoulder. Alpine goats are heavy milkers. Their milk can be made into butter, cheese, soap, ice cream or any other dairy product normally made from cow's milk.

Bali mynahs have white plumage with black wing tips and bright blue coloration around the eyes. They gathers in groups to better locate food and watch out for predators. Because of this poaching in their native Indonesia, Bali mynahs are found almost exclusively in zoos.

Chimpanzees are endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and hunting. Humans are less likely to identify chimpanzees as endangered, versus other great ape species, due to their use in entertainment. For this reason, as well as concerns about well-being, the Lincoln Park Zoo opposes the use of chimpanzees in entertainment.

Nice! It's not easy to get natural looking animal photo's in zoos but you're doing it.

Almost unbelievable images, Paul---It's almost like being beside you when you took the images, and really makes my attempts look very primitive!

Thank you Swamp-Cork! I hadn't thought of a description of being so close you feel like you're there too. I think I'll pocket that one for my own use. The flurry of images isn't intended as a competition nor to encourage a gear competition. Given the focus of the site is, to my eyes, too often on equipment, this string of images hopefully presents pleasing images that rely also on technique and processing, particularly as I exercise my 2018 tools on image files that date back as far as 2012. Glad you've enjoyed.

Thank you Retired CPO! From the LPZ, it helps that many of the animals can be viewed at eye-level and are not blocked by enclosures. For animals like the goats in the petting zoom, you can even get down on the ground if you're not too concerned about what the goats have been doing there ... Glad you've enjoyed.

Thank you Tony! If you've followed any of the discussions about teleconverters / extenders, I'll add the comment this image includes a 1.4x behind the lens. Glad you enjoyed.
