My only time in the Azores was extremely brief. I was enroute in March, 1961, from Maguire AFB in New Jersey to Paris for my two year Army assignment in the SW of France (Fontenet). But... that's another story. We landed at Lajes Field to refuel late at night in a blinding rainstorm. We deplaned and some of us headed to the Officer's Club for a few beers before resuming our flight to Paris.
Two years in the south of France!! How tough is that!! Did you come across Manon? That's even better than the first year of the war that my Dad spent billeted in a hotel on the beach in Miami Beach. The best picture I have is Dad and his three brothers playing football on the beach with his game ball from Michigan (which I have). His brothers were also in the Army and somehow wound up in Miami Beach at the same time, either on leave or assignment.
