Hood vs. filter to protect lenses
Use both cheeper to replace a filter than lens hoods add a layer of protection and benifit your exposure UV filter has minimal effect but does protect lens I feel it is foolish not to us both

If the filter costs less than a replacement lens hood, simply do not use it. I would also highly recommend a CLEAR filter not a UV filter. I would also recommend a B&W MRC filter as this contains Schott glass which is some of the best.vBest of luck.

Hi all! Anybody have any thoughts on the best way to protect camera lenses? I’m traveling to Germany in the fall and getting some new lenses for the trip. One person at the local camera shop said I definitely need UV filters to protect the lenses. Another person said that hoods were the only way to go! Help!
Just think of a filter as a condom for your lens. If the lens if going to be exposed to hazardous situations put it on.

I use UV0 filters on all my lenses (except the 8mm Rokinon). Will they protect my lenses from a direct blow from rock? I doubt it. Will they protect my lenses from the scratches of a manzanita patch or the wind-blown surf and sand or a lake? You bet they will - and the expensive ones I use are anti-static. They also protect my film lenses (one of which I use for digital also) from UV rays. They do not affect my digital pictures one way or the other.
If you're so certain there is no benefit to them, don't use them. The subject of hoods vs filters is a stupid argument. Each serves a valid purpose and can provide extra protection.
You will find true believers on both sides of this debate. Do you think the lens hood by itself will protect your lens?
Yes? Then don't but the filter.
No? Then buy the filter and use it.
The choice is yours and yours alone!

How about being just a little more careful ???
