I’ll be going on a Viking River Cruise in September. We’ll be visiting Geneva, Zurich, Zermatt, Basel, Strasbourg, Speyer, Mainz, Koblenz, Cochem, Bernkastel, Treir, and Paris. I plan on taking a Nikon D750, and the following lenses: Nikon 20mm F/1.8G, Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 G2, and a Tamron 70-200 F/2.8. I have a Nikon 200-500 F/5.6 but I won’t be taking it along.

Outside of the ‘normal’ things to shoot does anyone have any suggestions of ‘must see’ places and things to photograph?

I realize there are quite a few cities listed above. I’m hoping someone may have previously made the same trip or had visited some of the same places. I went on a Viking River Cruise in April 2017 to the Netherlands. It was absolutely wonderful.

Thanks.

In the Koblenz-Cochem area you may want to check out Burg Eltz.

When in Trier be sure to purchase the Roman access card. It allows you to explore all the Roman ruins around the city, the colliseum, the baths, the Black gate etc.
The Cathedral there is stunning as well.

Old Town Strasbourg is beautiful to wander around in. Great photo ops there.

At Koblenz be sure to head out to Deutsches Eck and its magnificent equestrian statue. (Actually, your ship will probably dock fairly close to it.) The American Army blew the statue up just before the end of the war. A new identical statue was erected there in the early 90's. It's an amazing sculpture and the third largest in the world.

Mainz Cathedral is unique and quite lovely as well.

Thank you for the tips! I’m unsure how long we’ll be in Treir. Presently we have a tour booked that takes us to the Roman Amphitheater, the Roman baths, the Roman City gates, the Porta Nigra, the Cathedral, and the Church of our Lady. I guess the Roman Access Card is given to the tour group.

Thanks for the tip on Koblenz and Mainz. The best part of my previous trip to the Netherlands was the ability to just wander around towns. There is so much to see.

Thanks so much for the feedback!!!

l know these places quite well, and I would advise you only take the 24-70, you don't want to be lugging all that stuff around in crowded and often very tight conditions as you will encounter in the Rhine and Moselle towns and villages. Last year I drove there with a camera bag full of lenses and I used my 40mm prime nearly all the time.

If your 70-200 is as heavy as my Nikon is, I would think about leaving it at home and investing in a 28-300mm. It is an excellent travel lens. It's sharp and crops well. I think, though, that you will find that the 24-70 will be your go-to lens for the most part. The 20mm may very handy in Cathedrals, for one thing. The 28-300 may give you some nice close-up views on some of the intricate parts of the beautiful buildings of Europe.

I’d love to take the 200-500 but I have to limit my gear as much as possible for travel considerations.

The 24-70 will be on my camera most of the time. I’ll use the 20mm for interior shots such as churches, cathedrals, etc. Fortunately we have a safe in our room, so I don’t have to carry everything around each time I venture out. The 70-200 will be kept in there except for certain situations.

I have a suggestion for you. Take me with, as your Camera equipment caddy. Have fun, those trips always look so inviting.
