Colin, I feel the contrast between the light and dark areas make the image. Even though you said it was a grab shot, you saw and recognized it as an interesting image. Good capture.

I usually will say to simplify with a crop but in this photo I think the vastness is captured nicely. I like the the light is spotlighting a certain area of it. It's too bad a motorcyle or bicyclist was not moving through the scene right in the area of light .. or something that would give the scene an added subject. That would have given it that special moment.

Your instincts were spot on and it was a great grab. And you did right in grabbing the shot and NOT waiting for the tripod which would have taken long enough to lose the feel and the lighting. You trusted your gut and captured a beautiful scenic in the glory of the moment with all its vastness.
