Mirrors are rapidly becoming a costly impediment to improved photography technology. Compare the IQ, high ISO performance, FPS, eye autofocus, and cost of the A7iii with any comparable DSLR. Cameras are tools. Better tools make it easier to achieve your objective. The number of professional photographers switching form DSLRs to mirrorless is probably 10 to 20 time the number switching the other direction.

jackpinoh I agree. Look at this comparison of $2000 cameras Sony Mirrorless A7III, Nikon DSLR D750, Canon DSLR 6DMKII.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_3EQPUbKqM&t=2699s BTW David Oastler is not paid by Sony or any camera company. He is an award-winning pro that buys all his own gear. Cheers

Well I don't shoot video on my Fuji XT1 but I do prefer it to my two Nikons D300/D7K. It reminds me of film - namely my FM & FM2 Nikons. I use virtually all my Nikon glass with the XT1 along with 4 Konica lenses and an Industar 55mm which is on the way. My initial reason for moving in this direction was weight. Now it is weight plus the ability to use so many great MF lenses via adapters. I get a great image/price ratio this way.

I was offered a near mint D810 today. Very tempting but $1600 for such a fantastic camera but it's too heavy for me. I won't be selling my Nikons as they are better at some things (surfing and wildlife) than the XT1 and I'm still attached to them having been a Nikon head for 50 year or so.

However I always have my Fuji with me.

In the end we are all "right" - it's just whatever turns you on most.

I could have written this myself, right down to the two Nikon models. I still have those, but I take my Fuji everywhere. It has refreshed my interest and it’s a delight to use.

Nikon live view button = mirror-less camera = great for tripod landscapes, etc. My friend has a much-touted Fuji "mirror-less". When shooting Ithaca water falls from tripods, I enjoyed pointing out that I was using my "mirrior-less" Nikon with a viewing hood and wireless remote. Live View locks the mirror up to eliminate vibration - an oldtime technique for landscapes - and the hood helped with composition in bright light. I know that there are some great mirror-less cameras out there, but it shouldn't be the main selling point since you can simply use LV to achieve the same advantage on a conventional DSLR. The important thing is camera optics and technique.

No DSLR live view does not equal mirrorless camera tech. But you can go ahead and think that if it makes you feel better.

Yes optics are the important part of the camera and technique is the important part of the operator and you seem to have skipped over composition as being an important part of the result.

Got an email from the New Camera website. The New release Sony a7iii, the $2000 bargain. Is the top selling camera, at this time, from B&H. It has been nicknamed the mini a9.

Wow! what a fantastic double negative! - and a derisive comment to boot. I started this thread as a sincere comment on technique and it grew to 6 pages of posts on peanut butter, bathroom habits, and personal barbs. In fairness, there were a few cogent comments from photographers. Overall, I'm reminded of a quote that starts "it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt." I'm going to stop watching this thread, hope that it dies after 6 pages, and take another break from UH.

PeterM, don't take it personal. You just have your facts so wrong folks here felt they had to chime into the discussion. Take a break from UH if you need it, but you are always welcome in any discussion. Just be prepared to be corrected if your facts are way off base. Cheers

You will be...cancel your order while you can and order from one of the many (better) mirrorless cameras Sony, Fuji, Panasonic or Olympus.

Meanwhile, as we're debating ML vs DSLR countless photographers are enjoying and taking great pics with their DSLRs and ML cameras - pick your preferred tool and enjoy it! If DSLRs are dead, don't tell that to the buyers waiting to get their D850s... see https://www.digitaltrends.com/photography/nikon-top-full-frame-seller-for-december-2017/ ...it's still backordered on the Nikon site.

Personally, if I am going FF, I would probably go Sony (vs DSLR), but the more I look at them the more I like the Olympus M43 system. If I am going to save weight and space, I might as well make it meaningful. From my viewpoint, there is no real benefit in the weight/size category with long FF lenses. With M43 and the 2x crop factor....now we're talking! And, the IQ is delicious too. But, it will be a while for me (unless I have a severe GAS attack this spring/summer)...we'll see.

No need to be sorry. I was neither approving or disagreeing, simply stating an opinion.
I find it quite humorous how people go on and on about the advantages of what they have and the disadvantages of what others have that is different. Not having a Mirrorless has not had a negative effect on my photography, although I do have a Canon M50 on order. I think of it as being like my G1X III but with interchangeable lenses.

Please, please cancel that Canon M50 order. you can do much better with a "real 4K" feature-laden mirrorless with a Sony A6500 or other choices from Panasonic or Fuji. That M50 crops your 4k on top of the 1.6X APS-C crop, and in 4k you can't use the dual-pixel focusing, so your focusing will be very poor. Please don't get caught on the Canon treadmill where they give half-baked cameras (but advertise the heck out of them to make you think they are super). You buy them, then you are stuck with small or no real improvements for years. I was a Canon pro user for 40 years, yes 40 yrs., but I got tired of Canon's abuse of its customers by NOT putting the best of tech into their cameras while Nikon and Sony and others did much better. I switched to Sony in January 2017 for its mirrorless tech , great image quality, innovative models and real substantial updates.

The only real feature on the M50 is its flippable screen for selfies or vloggers to see themselves. Well Panasonic has that covered, and soon Sony's next A6700 will too. Most expert reviewers have termed the M50 a missed opportunity by Canon and nowhere as good as present competitors' APS-C and micro 4/3 mirrorless offerings. If your budget can handle it , the Sony A7III would be absolutely the best full-frame mirrorless camera choice now value/performance in a system that you could grow with.

Again, please don't settle for the M50. This is a former longtime Canon user warning you.

If you really want to save weight and space, look at Panasonic. Although Panasonic and Olympus lenses are interchangeable, there are now brand specific features that only work with common camera/lens combinations. Panasonic has the smaller of the trilogy zooms (UWA, normal, near-tele), and they have an ultra-tele zoom as well.
