I need your opinions! I'm turning 70, and am torn on my present... to myself. L-bracket or carbon fiber tripod? I shoot mostly landscapes with my OLY M5 II. I currently use a MeFoto tripod that folds up to easily fits into carry on, which is important to me. It's a nice weight but needs to be tightened frequently, which is a pain, especially when I'm on a photowalk and didn't bring the case and the tools to tighten it. Hence, tripod GAS. BUT, an L bracket would be great to have in the field because once the tripod is adjusted, leveled, etc. I could change the orientation without having to mess with the tripod.

I have little choice on the bracket, Oly or RRS, because of the location of the battery door. I'm looking at the Manfrotto BeFree Carbon fiber, Srui travel CF, and a similar Oben, in case anyone wants to weigh in before I do some more searching here. :oD

I have RRS L-brackets and tripod and tripod head. All top-notch quality, and perhaps more expensive than you want to spend. You do not say how much you are willing to pay, but I suggest you look at the specifications on the tripods you are considering. In addition to one that folds up small enough for carry-on, you want to get one that has thick legs for more rigidity, you want one that is taller than you for more versatility [NOT with a center column...], my preference is for twist locks on the legs. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for, so don't base choice on getting a lower price.

If you go to the RRS website, under "Learn", there are some articles on Tripods. Even if you don't buy from them, the information is relevant to any tripod you may buy. Also take a look at the ones they make - note how "fat" the legs look. This is an important part of the tripod's rigidity and stability as well as its ability to dampen vibrations that could be transmitted to the camera.

Not sure how much help I'm going to be but here's my set up. When local I use a CF Manfrotto 550X Pro with a RRS ball head with an RRS L brackets. My travel tripod is a CF Bogen with a RRS ball head. I tried the MeFoto tripods and didn't like it. I don't like the twist locking system and I got sand inside the MeFoto's legs.
If I was you, I would just go for the CF tripod and a L bracket. You only live once!

If you can afford it, I totally agree. Then start planning (and saving) for something REALLY special for your 75th birthday. Happy Birthday!

I have Gitzo and Induro tripods. The Induro are about half the cost of the Gitzo, and I consider them nearly as good. Get a look at the Induro if you get a chance.

How much money are we talking about. You can buy top of the line tripod and bracket for less than 500 bucks. If that money is more important to you than anything else don't buy either. But if it isn't buy both and have a happy birthday.

Be aware there are two types of Loctite - Red and Blue.

Blue is removable (and therefore is a little less effective) and red is pretty permanent (needs heat and force to remove).

Sounds like Loctite Blue would work well for you.

Or acetone. I don't know what it will do to a carbon tube if you get any on it, but it should work on metal.
