Hello was wondering, I will be getting a new d500 real soon will the older sb 800 that I have work 100 percent with the d500, or will I have to get a new flash like the sb 5000?

Thank you cjc, from what I have read so far the new sb5000 is radio control and might shoot further, any idea?

I have multiple SB-800, SB-900 and SB-5000 units. I believe the latest units might have just a tad more power, but pretty much the same. The SB-5000 is the ONLY unit in Nikon's system that has built in wireless radio control and it ONLY works with the D500, D850 and D5 bodies and only with added equipment. All of the mentioned units, along with the SB-910 work with Nikon's optical remote system. It's a very versatile system indeed, but nowhere near as powerful as studio strobes, even the portable versions. Best of luck.

My speed light lets you shoot up to a quarter mile at night with the proper settings, can offer some strange effects also.(and it is thirty years old)

I still own and use 4 SB-800 flash units. I use them all the time with the D500. I like to reverse the head and aim it up and behind me for interior shots. I use manual exposure on the camera and TTL mode on the flash, works really well. With proper use you will get great results. I also have TTL slave units that allow me to use all 4 units at once. Same process is used. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

The one that has the most power (via the guide number) is the SB-800.

That may well be true, but you gotta watch ALL the specs when they post a GN. They are not always rated with all variables the same. In actual use, there is little to no difference between these units. What I never liked @ the SB-800 was the convoluted way of setting some of the modes. I just leave mine set as remotes and work with them that way. I also do not use the fifth battery as that just drives nuts when recharging battery sets! est of luck.
