So would you be comfortable boarding a flight where people could bring whatever they wanted onboard?

Probably would. I am a Marine retired in better physical shape than most my age. Besides that i would probably be as well armed as the bad guys. Remember 911 the people on the flight that hit the pentagon fought back had they been better armed ..... only god knows that answer. Since most tickets are bought well before the flight background checks could be made early but the airlines only want the money so they leave the government check at boarding time. A check when the ticket is purchased and marking it good bad or in between would allow a lot more to not have to be checked. In todays world to many people do things after they need be done like ID checks before boarding and ID photo on the ticket to match with your personal ID all done when ticket is bought not being done as last minute thought as it seems to be now. In fact ID check before might get a few more bad guys off the street before they even try to board.

Try being dark complected with a beard. I'm pulled aside EVERY time I fly (in "random" security scans) It's become a running joke in my family. They've never damaged anything, and have always been polite, so I just comply, and get on with my life.

Going through your camera bag is a lot less invasive than being "felt up" in line in front of everyone. Easier to just smile and move on. Life is too short to get upset about it.

I don't know if this will pertain to anyone, but I am excited! Last night I found new ways to control my camera! My camera is a Sony DSC-HX400v, the new way is through the mode dial, it consists of using the numbers on the mode dial. This will allow you into the creative features of the camera ie. standard, vivid, posterize etc. I'm very excited, it's like a new camera...Julian

This has happened to me upon occasion as well. Just an example of TSA doing their job!

A couple of years ago I return from Peru and going through customs at LAX when I was single out. CBP escorted me to room and started going through my luggage and camera bag. The agent picked up my tripod and asked me what I use the tripod for. I explained I used the tripod for photography. He continued going through my camera bag and pulled out a Nikon camera body and asked me what it is. I told him it was a camera that goes on top of the tripod he enquired about early. I also told him I had a connecting flight back to Northern California, and if he could expedite the search so I could catch my connecting flight. The CBP agent asked me what I did for work. I pulled out my wallet and showed him my federal & county law enforcement ID. He responded that he wasn't impressed with my ID. At that point I realized this guy was going to be an ass. I told him real cops don't check dirty laundry for a living they put criminals in jail. I missed my connecting flight.

I would have asked to speak to a supervisor (one law enforcement professional to another) as soon as I realized that the agent was playing games. Any agent doing TSA inspections knows what a camera and monopod are. They inspect many of them every day. Since that agent was giving you the full third degree, what more could they do to you if you complained; shoot you?

If you had ever been on the scene (before cleanup) of a passenger plane crash as I have been three times in my photojournalism career, you would not mind any security measures from federal or local government to possibly help keep you and/or your loved ones safe from ending their lives in that horrible and tragic way. Planes have mechanical failures and pilot error, but TSA do their jobs to lessen the odds from bad folks.

Have had them take second look quite a few times better safe than sorry, they treated my equipment fine.
Almost always find the note in my check in bags probably due to my tripods and accessories that I put in them.

Just returned to U.S. from Costa Rica bird shoot via LAX for connecting flight to Hawaii and was very surprised to have my bags singled out from the scanner by a TSA agent calling out "photography equipment"! I had 3 Nikon bodies and 4 lenses in my camera back pack and they took the pack to an inspection table and took all bodies and lenses out examining each one in detail. Even had to remove caps from both ends of the lenses so they could "see if they can see light through them". My question to traveling Hogs is has anyone else traveling recently through U.S. airports been subjected to this time consuming and detailed exam? Is it part of the new "getting tougher on security" policy announced late last year or have I just been lucky before not to have encountered such a probing inspection?

That does remind me of a trip I made. Flew to Florida, and tried to pack light, so I used a standard backpack, and to fit everything inside, I had to keep the lens separate. When they inspected the camera, they took the body cap off. You wouldn't think the little amount if time they took to inspect it would make a difference, but I ended up having to buy a sensor cleaning kit when I got to Florida, because the dust was unbelievable. It probably wasn't "pristine" before it was inspected, I don't do sensor cleanings until I notice a problem, but wow, my photos had dark polka dots all over in the light areas of the photo.

Lesson learned, leave the lens on the camera body. They will look through it, turn it on, etc, but they won't take the lens off in a dusty airport, face up...

A-holes that think their badge entitles them are, well, a-holes and don't deserve to be issued a badge.

Who gets a Federal and County law enforcement ID? You are one or the other. Or a poser.

It wasn't TSA, it was CBP (Custom Border Patrol) the guys in the dark blue uniforms. The ones that check your passport.

There was another CBP agent standing near by and saw my ID. I could tell he didn't want to get involved. If anything I could tell he was embarrassed with his partner.

I have been through TSA many times and never had my camera bag have more than a cursory look. That includes a couple trips to Canada. When my brother came to visit me from Canada, they tore all his stuff, including his camera, apart. Now he drives.

I can't argue with you on this. I remember the days you could walk aboard a plane with just about anything. Airlines paid for its own security pretty much before 9-11-01. And I remember the Hi-jackings of planes during the mid 1970s. Now, the Feds run the security by TSAs. I remembered when it was first started, grandmas were being thoroughly searched, sometimes overdone. I have been lucky when it comes to TSA searches, but my day will come, someday. They took my can of aerosol shaving cream. That's it.

When you're on loan to a federal agency from your local agency you get a federal ID. Also when I was on loan to FLETC as an instructor I had a federal ID.
When I worked Super Bowl 50, I was issued a Super Bowl Badge that was different from our regular badge. I've attached an image of that badge,
