I left my 100-400mm attached to my dslr and I can see how a TSA employee would be curious.

He pulled it out and was very impressed with the camera. Probably just bored.

Less than a 10 min delay

On the way back from Vegas I separated the lens and body and was not screened.

Turner out the guy in front of me had to go through security again because he had water in his personal mug.

Lesson. Don't take water in a personal mug through security.

Good for you. Many of these TSA agents don't have what it takes to become real law enforcement and many get off on having auth. ority. Too many people allow themselves to be subjected to this treatment.

Myself I would be more concerned if the required maintenance has been done correctly and all doors secured in the belly. I have not flown since shortly after the shoe bomber incident and decided I never will again subject myself to that treatment.

How stupid was this person to ask what a tripod and camera is? I drive everywhere and have no need to fly. I would like to.

Agree with you. Some of their hires think a Canon is a cannon

Years ago when airport security was in its infancy, I traveled to the UK. I had my Mamaya 1000s pro film camera with me. At Heathrow airport, waiting to board to come home, I asked the security to hand inspect my film rolls. Smart man, he asked me what iso i shot with....LOL. I immediately told him 1600 to 3200 iso. He wanded all the rolls, 45 of them. I was grateful to him he didn't put them through the fluoroscope.
Rich...

Had to deal with that in April 2004 when I Took the Long way to Chicago from LAX Via Newark for my Aunt's Funeral, had to go through TSA Checkpoint 2 Times going to Chicago, at LAX, Newark, & TSA Agent asked me what kind of Film did I Have for My Fuji Pocket Film Camera, & I had Fuji 800 Speed (6 Rolls), & they Tested it out to see if it had any Explosive Material on it, & the Same Thing when I Left Chicago O'Hare 2 Days Later.

Just returned to U.S. from Costa Rica bird shoot via LAX for connecting flight to Hawaii and was very surprised to have my bags singled out from the scanner by a TSA agent calling out "photography equipment"! I had 3 Nikon bodies and 4 lenses in my camera back pack and they took the pack to an inspection table and took all bodies and lenses out examining each one in detail. Even had to remove caps from both ends of the lenses so they could "see if they can see light through them". My question to traveling Hogs is has anyone else traveling recently through U.S. airports been subjected to this time consuming and detailed exam? Is it part of the new "getting tougher on security" policy announced late last year or have I just been lucky before not to have encountered such a probing inspection?

Yes, mine were inspected the same way, flying from outside the country...

Not quite as we all have been invaded by the mind set of terror and fear or terror which has impacted our freedoms and our liberties. How many more freedoms do we loose to the government in the act of removing terror and fear. One of the reasons I do not plan on traveling outside the USA is not fear it is the invasiveness of government and local officials who think you can solve terror by scanning good people while the terrorists still get by the scans.

I wont be stopped from traveling by fear of terrorists. But I am happy to have increased scrutiny of ALL passengers as an important security step. This is the new normal in this 2018 world, just get used to it.

I have a travel coffee mug that looks exactly like my Canon 70-200L lens. I think I'll leave it home on my next trip. LOL!

Came thru Miami in Jan from Nicaragua with al my camera gear. Breezed right thru. No problem. However, that was thru global entry which if you travel outside the US, is the only way to go.

A few years ago, I had trouble taking a monopod on board. TSA was going to stop me from taking it on the plane until one of the TSA supervisors, who must have been a photographer told the others it was not a weapon but a piece of camera equipment. I now pack it in my luggage.

Had to Pack Mine in Checked Luggage Before The Damn Fees Kicked in in 2008, when I Went to Vegas in October 2016 I Put a Selfie Stick in My Carry On to use for my Canon Powershot 150 Pocket Camera, No Issues There to & From Vegas, When I Went to Chicago for my Uncle's Funeral, & well as Cubs World Series Celebration 2 Weeks Later, Didn't Carry a Selfie Stick just My Canon SX50 Because it had the Pull out Swivel Screen & would have to heavy for the Camera, & i Aint Paying no Damn High Ass Baggage Fee to Pack a Tripod in Checked Luggage!😠

Yes. Shooting in Death Valley; returning thru Vegas to Atlanta. Ran my equipment through two different x-ray machines and again thru the line a second time. It took a little time but no big deal. The TSA agent was really nice. /George

It was the location of your originating flight. A lot of drugs transit through Central America.

I used to work for the TSA. It's not their job to look for drugs.

Before I rekindled my interest in Photography, My wife and I flew to Bilbao in northern Spain, her home town. I had packed my golf clubs in a box and had a cutout for the handle to protrude.

As I picked the clubs from the carousel and turned, I was met by a member of the military and he placed the muzzle of his automatic rifle under my chin. Needless to say, I froze in place.

My niece came to my rescue by brushing the weapon away and told the soldier that what I had was golf clubs. I opened the top of the box and removed the cover, he saw that I did not have a weapon inside. He apologized and I let out a long sigh of relief.

I have had cameras inspected very close in Little Rock.Budapest,Portland and London. My C Pap machine was a puzzle at some airports.
So you never know what to expect.

Well it's a good thing. On boarding in Detroit heading home, I got the the full nine yards, even with the pre-screening. The only upsetting part was the little boy asking his mother if I was going to jail during the pat down. Here in Florida, the State posts "Arrive Alive" billboards along the highway. The TSA can look thru my bag as much as they want so I can Arrive Alive!

That's the problem we are all "just getting used to it" out of fear and government control is really not the answer.
